I am looking for an all around revolver to hunt deer, bear, and moose in Maine. I have hunted deer with a Super Redhawk in 44Mag, but no longer have the gun and wanted to get some feedback and recommendations. I am considering anything from a 44Mag up to the 500 S&W. I would like your thoughts on both the caliber as well as SA or DA. Thanks

do you reload? alot will come down to this. How much can you spend for ammo if you don't reload? 460 S&W 3 choices (460,454,45lc) 454 (454, 45lc) 44 (mag, spec) 500? double action can be shot double or single. single action is it. do you prefer single action style grip or modern double action grip? It might not be an answer, only more confusion. When I hunt handgun I carry 2, one for hunting with scope and longer barrel, one for back-up on my hip and close in shots. :D

I have been hunting with a Super Red-hawk for the past several years in .44 mag. Own one with and one without a scope for diffrent applications. The combo has proven to be great for me both guns are DA but are usually shot SA at game.

Frankly, if you handload, it's hard to beat the Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt. With "Ruger only" loads it will shade the .44 Magnum. But realistically, you don't need to load that hot. A 255 to 300 grain cast flatnose bullet at standard .45 Colt pressures will do the job.

For deer and Black bear I'd think .44mag would be plenty......but when you throw a 1200lb moose in there at ranges past 100 yards, I'd like my .460S&W.

Any "all around" firearm is hard to pin down.....Best solution is to get both.:D

I started to hunt last season with a super blackhawk in 44mag (texas white tail and hogs) Ive extended my range by starting to shoot a contender in 7-30 waters (you can get them in several different calibers) I have 3 barrels for mine in 7-30,44mag and 22LR. shot the 7-30 today and my best 5 were around a inch groop at 100 yd. my 22lr barrel is a super 14 match grade barrel my best is 1/2 inch at 50 yards. 3 to 4 inch at 100 all of this is off a rest so with pratice I know that it will get better. when i start to roll my own ammo for the 7-30 and 44 mag.
