YEEEHAAA! Got my supplies in for my hunting round this year. Got the first batch for testing loaded and ready for range proofing this weekend.

270 WIN
NEW Federal brass from Grafs
Federal Primers
H4350 powder (54.0g)
Hornady SST ballistic tip 130g deer slayers

Loaded up on the Loadmaster, check every round after powder for the perfect drop. Put a slight crimp on the final stage to make sure they will not get knocked around while hiking and climbing.

Range report to follow on Sunday. I can taste that sweet venison already.
Hurry up October!

Good luck.
Those ballistic tips alway make a nice show.

What are you shooting them out of? (Probably a .270)

I'm particularly interested as I am just about to load some .270 for the first time. I have almost completed brass prep, have primers & bullets. Just need to buy powder.

My next hurdle will be load development on this round. I know better than to start a OCW vs. Ladder debate.

 Ahhhh, go for it!

Rifle is a synthetic stocked Remington 700 ADL with 4 X 12 X 50MM scope. Basic stock issue everything. A real tack driver at 200 yards. Great deer gun, small enough to not blow the poor deer to pieces and large enough to insure a one shot kill. I just hope my handloads are as good as I know the gun is.

After looking at those pictures I have a couple of questions. Why isn't the bullet seated to the cannelure? I'm assuming if Hornady put a cannelure on the bullet it would be put where one normally seats the bullet. Am I wrong in thinking this?

Same question.

Hey there ;
They look good . Just wondering , from the photo 130 grainers looks like they are loaded a little on the long side. Just wondering.

the cannelure is there for the "mass" weapons that fall into a certain range. most of the time i have found that i come nowhere near it to seat my good rounds.

I don't take any notice of the cannelure as a reference point to seating either, as long as there is enough seated in the case neck to hold them straight and tight, and the bullet is not lodging into the lands upon chambering. Those loads should shoot as good as any factory made or better, if you take as much care to get them all consistant as possible.
My 270win is also a tack driver with 130gr hunting bullets and 52-54gr AR-2209(H4350) all the way out to 1600 yards and beyond, it aint all that fussy about being exact when it comes to bullet seating depth.

Seating depth is controlled by the depth of the throat. The actual base of the bullet is at the base of the neck in the case. There is full contact with the neck. I seat from rifling contact back .04" Book shows 3.28 for OAL, these are 3.402. Evean at 3.28 the cannulure would be outside the neck. One more reason for a light crimp, although even without any crimp I could not press the bullet deeper by hand on the tabletop. These are loaded to fit the gun, which is where I find my best accuracy. Photo will follow tonight to show the difference. (I'm at work right now)

The SST's are getting a good reputation, good expansion without breaking up. Hard to beat the 270 for reaching out and touching a BIG bambi. Good luck!

I hit a watermelon with that same bullet combo, except I used H-414. The watermelon exploded.:uhoh: There was not a piece larger than a quarter. Don't hit that deer any place that you expect to eat;)

Griz44,

Congrats on the loaded 270's. I too load for the 270, but it's been years. I think the 270 is an excellent do-it-all caliber. You can zip 90 grain bullets at 3400+ fps, or launch a 170 projectile that'll go through a barn door, and out the other side.

The 270 has long been lauded for it's flat shooting trajectory and long range knock down power. I killed a deer at a long paced 225 yards years ago and that deer dropped in it's tracks.

Great calilber.

Did you check to see if they fit in your magazine or are you single loading them?

Cool.

Hey There;
I was by no means questioning you, or your reason, I assumed that you were loading to the free bore specs. Just the photos make the 130s look long.

Let us know how they shoot.
I have a good load for my .270 but am always on the prowl.

Kelbro, I am shooting a Remington ADL, the magazine loads from the top under the bolt, I think I could put a 4-1/2" long rounds in that cavern! I think it is the same magazine that they install on all long action 700 models, so everything up to a 300 win mag should fit in it. These chambered great! I just can't wait to shoot them. I still owe a couple of pics, I'll get those in just a little bit.

Griz, I am of the belief that Hornady just put the cannelure too far up. Your rounds look exactly like mine with Speer HotCor 130's except no cannelure.

Best of luck, friend.

Maybe they use the cannelure to control the expansion to help lock the core along with the interlock rings.
Remington's used the core-lokt cannelure for years.

I have been using the .284" dia 139gr version in my 7 Mag (though it takes almost 20gr more powder to push them :) ). I am extremely happy with the accuracy (sub 1/2" @100) and terminal performance. Good luck.

BTW, on mine the cannalure is WAY out past the necks also...

I load for my son's .270 ADL and I know what you are talking about there with the magwell. I was thinking about the detachable mags on my .270 A-Bolt :) but the ADL was my dad's gun so my son is too doggone proud of it to 'upgrade' :)
