Hunting with a SINGLE SHOT (Encore)?

The last 4 deer I've taken took 1 shot each to put down. Of the 4 only 1 went 20 yards from impact.

The encore will work just fine as long as you do your part.

I own three main hunting wepons, two are single shot rifles, while the third is a Marlin .444 Levergun, the single shot rifles I own include a Ruger #1s in .338 Win Mag, and a T/C Encore, when I first bought the Encore I bought it as a209x.50 Smokepole, since then I have added two other calibers to round out my caliber selection. First I added a 24" heavy barrel in .260 Rem caliber it wears a 4-12x50 Vivitar Scope, which has been successful for me on Elk, Moose & Whitetail, the latest barrel I added is a 26" heavy stainless barrel in .22-250 caliber topped with a Bushnell 6x-18x50mm scope for coyotes & wolf. Both the .260 Rem & .22-250 Rem caliber configurations are deadly accurate 1 shot killing tools. Lots of fun to shoot too. If I had to live with only one rifle it would be my T/C Encore with several barrels.:D

H&H,

I agree with the prone part of your post. I disagree, however, with your assertion that the bring NOTHING to the table. They do allow someone to buy one rifle, then add calibers rather easily and inexpensively.

If someone wants one platform to hunt game that ranges in size from tiny to ginormous, well, an Encore and 3-4 barrels would do that a lot cheaper than 3-4 identical rifles with different chambers would. Especially if those rifles were of the same quality as the Encore.

Goalie,

Point taken that is an advantage if one wants to have a switch barrel rig. They are an inexpensive switch rifle.

The rest of my opinion remains unchanged. I don't like the Encore platform in general. But once again this is a personal taste thing with me not a reflection on anybody who chooses to use an Encore.

After all I know some guys who drive Chevy's who aren't completely retarded.;) :D

I thought that I would, and lord knows I tried to like it. But in the end, the switch barrel capability and short OAL wasn't enough of an offset for it's quirks and limitations (long lock time, slow reload, tight chambers, weird balance, vertical stringing from a rest using a stock forearm, etc.).

I no longer have an Encore; I either hunt with a medium-bore AR15 or with a Rem700 in either 25-06 or 270.

H&H,
Don't candy coat it bro. Just let us know how you really feel. :neener:

I almost feel the need to toss my T/C in the creek after that rant!
Of course, that may be my reason to buy a Blaser K-95 (Oh no!.. another break open!!) Oh, well, I still have my #1. (Remington, not Ruger)

Incidentally, I've read that the Encores tend to string vertically because thay have no pitch in the butt stock. Not because of the forend. My two pennies.

H&H Hunter ...where are you? :p He is going to hurt me...

Single shot for hunting? Yep. Do so all the time.
Greatest percentage is with a Single Shot Shotgun. I do not get to deer hunt as I once did, that said , deer have fallen in addition to small game ducks, geese and we have a fun thing on whom can take a 15 limit of doves with the fewest shot shells. My personal best, 11 shells to fell 15 doves with a 28 ga single shot shotgun.
Running a straight in Skeet, with a single shot shotgun, not ladies skeet, regular skeet. [One has to know the gun and get that second loaded and still get second bird]

My "half double guns" if you will. Not as nice as H&H's , still, one can do what must be done if they train and put in the trigger time.

Encore? No experience with Encore. Thompson Center I do have - and with the .410 and shooting skeet is an experience. :p

I keep a stick of beef jerky in pocket when I shoot my "half double guns".

It is all good. :D

<takes off running...>

H&H,
One more thing... What do you have against the 7mm? Any 7mm in particular, or all of them? Mind you, I don't own a 7mm, but dismissing a caliber (.284) by itself seems a bit, well, harsh.

And no, I'm not talking about using a 7mm against buff or bear, but rather fuana suited for taking with, say .257 to .308 or so.

I like my Encore, honestly. Single-shot handicap? Maybe, but I don't feel handicapped. My game killing experience is 100% with a shotgun so far, and I can't really say a single shot would have handicapped me. (Granted, I can vividly remember one duck that took 3 shots to kill, but there was plenty of time between #1 and #2 to reload, and #2 should have done it.)

I like the way my Encore balances and handles as a 20" rifle in .50 muzzleloader or .45-70. I like the easy barrel interchange. I love the short OAL. I like the way the stocks fit me, way better than any bolt gun or lever action I've ever grabbed.

The trigger is only borderline OK in my book, but not bad. The aesthetics are what they are, but I have an AR-15 that is more ugly (and likely more accurate) and like it just as much. And reloading from anywhere but standing is a PITA (no big deal with the muzzleloader though), but I can deal with it.

For a general purpose single-shot hunting tool, so far I like it. Ask me again after I get a chance to shoot something with it though! ;)

Smoke,:)

I don't have anything against the .284 diameter bullet in general. I think the 7MM is one of the finest deer and light critter rounds ever built.

I just get sick and tired of guys bragging how they got rid of that crappy ole 06 so they could shoot elk at 700 yards with that there new super duper 7Mag.

I've said it before I'll say it again the 7Mag doesn't give any practical advantage on elk sized critters at any range over a .30-06 PERIOD..

Realistically it is a a belted necked down 06 from a particle field shooting stand point.

I don't dislike the 7mag just the BS that tends to go with it.:D

Hope that clears it up.

H&H,
I know what you mean. Too many guys think an extra 100-200fps turns a woods rifle into a lazer beam. Truth be told, animals don't know the difference if hit properly, and time spent practicing with a .30-06 is worth way more than a new 7mm ubermag that hasn't been taken out but once to get the scope on target before a hunting trip.

Of course, I think 150 yards is a long ways, too. (Iron sights, baby!!)

I use an Encore pistol & Contender G2 carbine. Both are highly accurate. I personally wouldn't want to shoot magnum calibers in an Encore rifle, but mine spend a lot of time at the range, so I think in terms of lots of shots. 25-06 is a great antelope & deer round & I have harvested elk with same, but it is a tad light for penetrating heavy bone if your aim is off a mite. If I had an Encore rifle, I'd want it in 308.
