Just got my first deer with the Encore. 30-06 dropped it at 200 yards. after the shoot used a rangefinder and walked the distance. Most people i know dont like the idea of a single shot rifle but when i hand them my encore i get nothing but complements on how light it is and how short it is with a 24" barrel. Living in the catskills its nice to have a light rifle when climbing up hills. Looking into getting another barrel for it and im not sure what i should get, 308 or 7mm-08. I reload for the 308 but have heard good things from 7mm-08.

SpringfieldM1A, I have the pro hunter in 7mm.08. Has the 26 inch barrel and, like you, I love the shorter overall length. Best of both worlds, shorter rifle with a nice long barrel! If you are going for white tail or even elk, with the proper bullet construction, you will not find a better calibre in my opinion. For deer especially. It is a little on the edge for Elk. Many have been killed with them and it will do a good job but you could do better with a bit bigger for them. Flat shooting, very good retained energy, will flat put the smackdown on deer and hogs, and best of all, the recoil of a .243!!! I honestly feel that the 7mm.08 is what the .308 WANTED to be but didn't get there. With it's popularity growing, bullet choices are growing for it as well. I reload for mine and find my magic combination to be 139gr Interbond or SST sitting on top of 51gr IMR4350 for deer. For hogs I use a 162gr Interloc sitting on top of 45gr of 760. Use that load for elk as well with success. Both loads hold well under MOA.

I also shoot the pro hunter in 30-06 and a 209x50 ml in my contender im shooting a 7-30waters,30-30 win,223,44mag,and a 22lr.great shooting system.
my next will be a 7-08 for my daughter for xmas next year. and a 7-08 for me in a short barrel. out of all my barrels im getting great accuracy when I do my part. The 7-30 ive been able to put 5 inside a inch at 100 yds this dosnt happen all the time but it shour is nice when I do my part.
