Well I haven't deer hunted in 7 years... too many things got in the way and I grew away from it. Well in the past year I've made a bunch of new friends through other sports and it turns out they all love to hunt. So this year they are planning a hunting trip up to my house (they are from the city). SO I need to prepare for my first hunting season in years.

I always hunted with a Savage model 99 in .300 savage. I still have the rifle, it was given to my grandfather in payment for a debt, my father shot his first deer with it and I shot my first deer with it. It has taken some abuse over the years and I have retired it to the safe, it has too much sentimental value.

So I've decided on a winchester model 94 for my new deer rifle. I love the classic look and feel. My question is this. I'll be hunting white tail at 120 yards or less... which caliber would you choose? 30-30 or .44mag? My local dealer has 7-8 30-30's all for the price of $350-375 and he has one perfect .44 mag for $550. I really like the idea of the .44 because it's a caliber I already own. But if the 30-30 makes a better deer round for less $$$ I might go with that. Just looking for feedback.

At 150 yards or less, either will do THEIR job if you do YOUR job in putting the bullet where it needs to go.

I have taken deer with both calibers and they are both quite effective. Hope you enjoy the hunt!
