Anyone else see I am Legend today!

I thought it was a great SHTF movie, but I was curious what people thought of the weapons setup he had in it? I was surprised he didn't have night vision optics on that rifle, considering the creatures stay in the dark and all:rolleyes:

Anyway I just figured this movie needed a thread;)

I though the CG was pretty convincing, the city certainly looked overgrown and abandoned and the creature effects were pretty good. Shame about his pooch though, that got me all choked up:(

I was planning to take my boys this weekend. It looks like it'll be good. The wife is torn. She's not thrilled by the zombie aspect of it but he has a German Shepherd Dog and like me, she loves German Shepherd Dogs.

Post your thoughts on it when you get back.

The reviews haven't been too kind to it - the few I've heard/read have said that the CG is pretty bad. But it sounds interesting - a guy who is immune to a zombie plague trying to find a cure....

I watched the HD preview that is on the website. Some of the CG looks like it was done for the SciFi channel. But that doesn't matter, I am going to see it. I only wish he has a semi auto AR. That would be a nice change, but given that he is on an aircraft carrier playing golf, I assume he found a full auto there.

Anyone know what kind of hand guards he has on it?

I don't remember the name of the original, but this is a remake, and the original was pretty good, itself. SHTF movie, not gun movie, though (not that that's bad :) )

It's based off of The Omega Man starring Charlton Heston.

Umm, are you sure? I think its based on the book by Richard Matheson, copyright 1954. The Omega Man didnt come out until 1971... In the book, theyre vampires, and "Robert Neville", Will Smith's character, is English-German with blue eyes. Ive not seen the movie yet (though I want to) Im just amused at the creative liberties they took.

Wasn't there another movie in the 80's about someone being the last person on earth?

The Quiet Earth (1985)

The movie is actually based on Richard Matheson's 1954 science fiction novel (named the same) but the movie you might be refferring to could be 1964's The Last Man on Earth or 1971's The Omega Man. Both movies were based on the novel but from what I have gathered I Am Legend follows the book very closely, except Dr. Robert Neville is black in the movie & it is not based in Southern California but rather New York City. Also the book takes place in 1976-1979.

According to a review I just read, it's like the latest of four or five remake renditions of the same book. But it still looks good, so I'm going to try to see it.

The original movie may have been based on the book, but Legend is a remake of the Omega Man which was a very decent movie. In comparison , like most remakes it is sadly lacking in all areas.

I read the book - more of a short story actually.

From what I've seen of the previews, the movie is nothing like the book.

Except for the basic "last man, plague immune" aspect. Otherwise, it ain't the same.

That is correct, there have been 2 or 3 remakes, The Omega man was very cool when it came out, " now it looks like an old flick" but I remember seeing it in the theatre in the seventys. And the promo line was , "the last man on earth is not alone", just don't ask me what I had for dinner. Check out a flick called "NO country for Old Men", very sick gunman, with silenced weapons, and a can of compressed air, that shoots a 3inch bolt, used for killing steers, that is his weapon of choice.

Okay it is based on the book of the same title and so was omega man. Mr. White if your wife loves shepards don't take her to see it. I thought the movie was excellent except for the fact that it had very little plot similarities to the book.

I saw it earlier. I liked it, but I do agree with the reviews that the CG was pretty bad. Will Smith did an excellent job though, and the overall movie was good as long as you can get past the CG.

WHAT?! I am not hearing this. Next thing you youngsters will be claiming "300" is better than Milius' "Conan." There is only one master of this role. And it ain't Vincent Price and it ain't Will fricking Smith. It's THE MAN HIMSELF!

BOW DOWN BEFORE HIS MIGHTY HAND!

What would have been better would have been a more faithful adaptation. If you haven't read the book, I highly recommend it.

It's as much a character study of Neville as it is a supernatural story. A war of some sort happens, and the fallout turns people into "living (somewhat human, but can't abide sunlight)" and "dead (animalistic, zombie types)" vampires.

Neville drinks too much, kills sleeping vampires during the day and blasts Wagner on his stereo. He's fortified his house, and is constantly harassed by his neighbor, who's one of the "dead" vampires. He's only a layman, and he researches the nature of the disease, but has only the local libraries to consult. The point is that Neville isn't trying to "cure" the human race, it's just another thing to pass the time before the inevitable.

Much of it is about Neville's insular nature, and his inability to connect with others.

Heck, that version wouldn't require any CGI at all; just some makeup and costumes.

Maybe that's why I'm not a Hollywood millionaire...

I thought it was pretty good, it's alot different from the book for those of you who have read it.

The guy in the book was some regular German-Irish guy who stayed drunk alot in an effort to self medicate his way through the whole ordeal though. He wasn't a scientist who specialized in viral infections and he didn't have a military background. That was the point of the whole book, it was just some regular guy doing his best to survive in extra-ordinary circumstances. The creatures were also different, in the book they were described more as vampires with their features more or less intact and with more of their brain function left after they became infected while in the movie they seemed like mutated zombies.

About the only things that were the same is that the a guy name Robert Neville still lived in a homemade armored house during a wipespread infection of some sort that turned people into freaky monsters that liked blood and wanted to feed on people, that he was interested in possibly curing the infection through science and that there were a dog and a woman in it (the dog and the woman were in different forms). The end was different as well, in the book he realizes that the new vampire society is now considered normal and that he's now considered the "monster" and he takes a bunch of pills after being captured and he commits suicide to avoid having his blood sucked out of him. I never expect a movie to be as good as the book, so all in all if you're just expecting some entertainment for an hour and forty minutes then I think that most people that post on THR would be pretty happy with it. If you're expecting some deep story award winning story with lots of dialogue about how delicate society is and how the human spirit lives on no matter what then you'll probably be pretty disappointed.

I still thought it was a pretty good SHTF movie even though they didn't stick to the book at all and it still adds to the whole zombie/vampire/creepy monsters have taken over the world genre. It's worth seeing in the theater just for the wide screen and to feel and hear the other people's reactions in the theater to the screaming/snarling and extremely toothy blood thirsty gang of creatures that jump out at him from time to time.

Loved "I Am Legend"...saw it this afternoon. The CGI deer and lions looked very..."Jumanji" like (not good) but I was able to get past that.

My wife was on the verge of hysterical weeping at one point in the movie and I was trying HARD to get rid of the lump in my throat.

Loved the movie...gonna go see it again.

After watching the remastered "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Patton," I've come to the conclusion that CGI has utterly destroyed an entire generation of movies. It's utter, complete and total GARBAGE.

I liked Omega Man much better.

Although I thought the visuals were amazing and the movie was really good (until about 20 min from the end, when it just breaks down into sappy worthlessness... blegh), I wish that the "zombies" were more intelligent/evil like they were in Omega Man.

Overall, though, I give this one a big *sigh*
