I would like to get a new 308 rifle but not sure what to get. I was thinking about a rem 770 or 700. the 700 is a lil high price but you get what you pay for I know. this is where i need help. the 770 looks like a good gun but I have heard alot of bad things about it. I am open for suggestion. thank you.

What are you going to use it for? Hunting, target shooting? Ranges involved? What characteristics would you like? And what price range were you looking for? More info is needed in order to give you an informed suggestion.

If you are getting a gun and will rarely shoot it then the 770 will be sufficient. If you will shoot it then get the 700. The 770 is generally regarded as a "throw away" gun. It will be easier to get a 700 repaired if something goes wrong with it.

There are so many quality made rifles available that I couldn't even begin to recommend one since I don't know what features you prefer or what style you like. The only suggestion I would make is that nobody ever regretted buying high quality. Unless cost is the utmost consideration I think you are better off going with a more deluxe model rather than a more basic one.

Savage 10FP + Harris Bipod + match ammo + milspec duct tape + foam = 1,000 yard shooting goodness

Any decent hunting rifle will get you started. A decent scope with mildots or some sort of hash marks is needed to estimate range without a finder and handle wind.

Training is most important. You can get it through some courses (the fast way) or join a shooting team and get coached. Once you have some experience, THEN drop some serious cash on a custom rifle, great scope and a reloading setup.
