On May 2, at 4:00pm my wife was in a serious truck accident. She over-corrected and rolled her 2000 Chevy Silvarado 1500 several times ending up on the roof. The air bags deployed and she was wearing her seat belt. The roof was crushed down to within 6 inches of the top of the door panel. We live in a rural area and it was a few minutes until help in the form of a 16 year old girl arrived. All she could do was hold her hand. My wife was trapped and her airway was parcially blocked. She was having trouble breathing. The first responders arrived and needed the jaws of life to get her out. She was not breathing when they got her out, but quickly established an airway. She was life-flighted by helicopter to the University Hospital in Columbia, MO. She sustained three broken vertibrae (C1, T3 and L1). She had full use of her arms and legs from the get go. She also has a broken collar bone and 4 broken ribs.
At 2:00 pm last Monday the ninth, I brought her home. It is simply amazing the miracles that God lined up for her. Two minutes the other way and I would have lost her. Great work by the EMT's, life-flight crew and the Trauma center and the University of Missouri Hospital. She is in a cervical collar and if everything stays in place and heals there will not be a need for surgery. There are not enough words to thank all who helped save my wife. We will try though.
Wear your seat belt!

Very glad to hear she's doing well. I know that God looks out for us, and I also know that EMTs, Firefighters, and Paramedics deserve more money than they get.

God bales Rickster.
So very happy to read good news here.

I'll charge hange line to:
EMTs, Firefighters, and Paramedics deserve more RESPECT than they get. And add police and other LIO's

Take good care of her, glad she is alright.

RTFM

God Bless you and your wife (I know, he already has, but a little more won't hurt anything)!

I'm very glad to hear that she is recovering so well. That list of injuries could yeild FAR worse results. My family and I will keep you in our prayers that her healing continues.

Wow, lucky indeed. Seems there is a purpose for her that isn't realized yet. Best wishes for her speedy and complete recovery.

Rick - a small miracle it'd seem.

Indeed, there has to be much left for her to do in what is hopefully still a very long and happy life. I'll wager you suffered the torments of hell thru the days immediately following.

Best wishes to you both.

Rick, best wishes for a complete speedy recovery.

Wear your seat belt!

I was in a similar wreck (overcorrected & rolled a couple of times) & walked away because of the seat belt. The only injury I got was a small piece of glass in my head because I didn't realize I was upside down when I unbuckled  .

Wear them they work.

Rick,

How nice it is to hear that you can still see the good in spite of the tragedy that has befallen your family. You and yours are truly blessed!

Good luck with the recovery effort! Your family will be in our thoughts and prayers!

I'm glad your wife is on the mend.

Yep, gotta hand it to the folks who run toward the sound of gunfire/crunching metal.

very glad to hear that the outcome looks so good.Sounds like a miracle for sure.

the rescue guys really do a hard job and I praise them to the roof tops at all times.LEO and fire fighters as well.

Glad to hear she's mostly okay and sounds like she'll recover.

She sustained three broken vertibrae (C1, T3 and L1).

Very, very, very, very lucky lady to have survived a C1 fracture, must not have been a very bad one. Someone was definitely looking out for her.

Speedy recovery to your bride. Thanks for the kudos for firemen,EMTs, Medics. Most of us do it for the love of the job, certainly not for the bucks.

Glad to hear your wife is on the mend.

Let's not forget that 16 year old girl, first to arrive and hung in there with your loved one. That takes courage in a youngster to venture into a mess like that and do what she can. It means a lot to not be alone in those first minutes.

Rick:

My thoughts are with you and your family. Your story gave me pause to remind myself how blessed I am to have a wondeful wife and three beautiful children. I wish your wife a speedy recovery and you and your family the best success during this time.

Thank you to all who have responded.

We are meeting with the 16 year old soon. She lives close by, but had prom and graduation last week. Mary Lynn feels a little better this week also.

The thing about the EMTs, First Responders, deputies and the like up here is that unlike those in the big cities, these men and women have personal ties to the people they rescue and sometimes loose. It must be much harder on them because of that.

When Mary Lynn is all better, we plan to have an "open house" so that all may come by and receive our thanks. I am not a shabby bar-b-quer and they will have a fine spread.

I can't go 5 minutes in town without someone asking about her. Friends have brought food. We live in a good community and are thankful of that.
