I am right handed so I carry a left hand opening folding knife clipped inside the left hand pocket of my pants. The reason is that I figure the knife is a last ditch weapon and therefore would only be used during an actual struggle. I figure I will naturally and by instinct be using my right hand in grappling with the opponent. Therefore I will use my left hand to obtain the knife.

For instance I am grabbed from behind and placed in a chokehold. My right hand will be used in the struggle to get free while the left hand goes for the knife.

Also a left hand opening knife can always be used by your right hand anyway.

I am right handed and carry my folder clipped to my left front pocket, but for slightly different reasons. I carry my pistol in a pocket holster on the right front, and I dont want them in the same pocket.

I do the same.

We really must train to get to and fight with each of our defense tools with either hand. Practice drawing from your regular carry holster in the normal position with both the strong hand and your support hand. Same with the knife. Carry it where you can reach it with either hand, but considering it as primarily as secondary and weak side option is not bad thinking. Or, carry TWO knives, one on each side - problem solved.

i'm right handed but keep my knife on the right side - more or less in the 4 o'clock position. quick and easy access to my right hand, but my left can reach around my back and grab it too if necessary.

the main reason is that i'm just used to keeping stuff on the right side of my pants. maybe i should think about this more.

As a lefty. I carry a knife in my right pocket and my pistol in my left pocket. sounds like I am the mirro image of some of you.

Out of curiousity, is this reasoning based on thought exercises or experience?

I ask because I've been involved with grappling-oriented martial arts for a few years now, and I've always found the opposite to be true. That is, as a right-handed person, both instinctually and intentionally I use my left hand and arm for general, crude actions and strength-based things, while my right arm is reserved for things requiring finesse.

Based off of this, I've always invisioned using the left hand to maintain distance or to break contact while the right would be entrusted with the blade.

However, this might just be my personal method.

I keep my knife on the right side, along with my gun, because I don't ever plan on pulling it for self defense. I don't ever want to get into a knife fight and if deadly force is called for the gun is coming out.

Glock at 4 o'clock(right handed). In close quarters if someone tries to grab my gun or tangle up my drawing hand, I want to be able to get to my back up weapon (Gerber folder) with my left hand. I'm damned sure not letting go of my Glock!!

Stay safe.

I'm right handed and i instinctively block with my left side and lead with the left side in a bladed stance (just like many shooting stances). If all i am carrying is a knife then it goes on the right side where it is most usefull as both a tool and a weapon. if i am carrying a firearm i carry the knife on the left. The idea being that if I have to defend myself I'm going to have the gun in my strong hand. The knife is there in case im pinned down or struggling for my pistol.

Really though I almost never carry a knife on the left even though i carry a knife every day. For me knives make much better tools than weapons, and tools are on the strong side.

I did carry a knife on both my left and right as a right hander, but recently stopepd with the process. I was carrying both as tools, just wanted one my left hand could reach easier. I stopped carrying the left side one when a coworker grabbed for it(yes, he is an idiot). I instinctively twisted away and realized I had just put my sidearm side closer to him. I stopped carrying the knife on that side that very day. I figure if Im in a weapons retention scenario(probally very unlikely in my current life of student/retail worker) I want my exposed weapons/tools on my right side, as I usually use my left hadn to block things. If I right hand is out of commision, I do have a pistol in the left side pocket, and dont think its very likeley someone can snatch it out of the pocket holster.

I was as sapper leader described. I changed after I had a kid that I coach ask what is that, and tried to grab my Benchmade clipped to my left pocket. It is easier for me to control both on my right side, Pistol and pocket knife.

My ASP Palm Defender is my left hand SD tool, as well as my L4 in my left pocket.

Left Handed

Typical Carry:

Sig 229 on left at 7:00

P3AT in right front pocket in cheapie uncle mike's pocket holster (need to fix that soon)

Leatherman on right at 4:00

Surefire in left pocket

Soon to be added: Some form of folder at about 10-11:00. Currently looking at a Cold Steel Recon but need to do more research.

I want to add that if I am going to carry a folder on my weakside(which I still do If I need the extra blade for a task), I either place it in my waistband or in my cargo pocket, I just no longer have it sitting in the top of a pocket calling to the idiots of the world.

I don't know if you want to pull out a knif if your already grappling cause it might get pushed into you in a fall or while tumbling. I Keep my knives anywhere but not where it can be seen so it doesn't get taken. If you get rapped up in a fight there are numerous things you can do with just your fingures to cause enough pain to break an attackers hold.

Try grabbing under the ribs. Poking eyes, throat, groin. twisting the enemys fingures. stomp the feet. head butts. and if your choked with an arm around the neck looking to the side will help you breath. pull an ear off. pull hair. Pretty much if it comes to grappling and open fist fighting you need to be as trained as with a gun. I myself don't sport fight so if we grappled for example I would go for vitals to kill not subdue knife or no knife.

I got into a fight once and the guy pulled a knife and dropped it.
So if you don't know how to fight with a knife don't.

and also try grabbing the actual muscles or tendons and pull and twist. This technique hurts alot and messes up the muscle or tendon.
