Two Secret Service officers injured at White House
Tue Apr 17, 2007 3:28 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Two Secret Service officers were injured on Tuesday after a gun held by another Secret Service officer accidentally fired inside the White House gate, according to a spokesman, Darrin Blackford.

Their injuries are non-life threatening, the spokesman said.

One officer suffered a shrapnel wound to the face, and the other was wounded in the leg.

They were taken to George Washington Hospital.

At the time, President George W. Bush was on a trip to Blacksburg, Virginia, to attend a ceremony at Virginia Tech university following Monday's shooting rampage.

"It appears that at approximately 2:10 p.m. (1810 GMT) there was an accidental discharge of a service issued weapon, which occurred inside the Southwest Gate at a security post near the White House," Blackford said.

Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House, Lafayette Park across the street from the White House and other nearby walkways were all shut down to pedestrian traffic due to the incident. Many police vehicles were in the area.

Accidental discharge. Riiiight.

If it had been an accidental discharge, the bullet would have struck a nonliving object, due to the firearm never being pointed at anything the wielder did not wish to destroy, and at the very least would always be pointed in a "safe" direction. Oh wait...

ND!

FYI, the gun in question was an MP-5 in the hands of a brand new Secret Service officer. He was inside a 10 x 20' cinderblock post at the time, with three other officers.

In attempting to clear the weapon, he saw a round "stuck" in the chamber. When he closed the bolt to try to extract the round, he apparently had his finger on the trigger (Yikes!) and (surprise!) the weapon discharged into the nearby cinderblock wall. Fragments from the wall struck the officer in his face and the bullet richocheted around the building, finally striking another officer in the leg.

Fortunately, the magazine had already been removed so there was only one shot.

[NOTE: This is second-hand information from a Secret Service Officer who knows all the parties involved.]

Depending on who becomes our next president, the Secret Service may be required to use trigger locks and store their ammo elsewhere in a locked container.

Trigger Locks

Which president?

Well there was some talk of "lock boxes."

I'm not sure they were for triggers.
