I am thinking about a 6.5x47 build what do you guys think???

To defend the .308, there is not an "accurate cartridge".. there are accurate rifles, and since most 6.5x47 Lapua builds are expensive the accuracy is better than the majority of .308 rifles, but a .308 round doesn't have alot to do with it.. The rifle and the shooter, Do..
There are many .308's that can print groups under 5" at 1000 yards, but more can't even hit a target at 300.. that is more the rifle than the round..
However most every 6.5x47 Lapua that is around will drive tacks, because it isn't really a common caliber and not alot of rifles are chambered for it, like they are for the .308
Just my outlook on it though..

did somebody say 6.5x47?
I'm a little partial, but this is absolutely a badass cartridge. Small primer, varget or h4350 powder, and boat loads of high bc bullets to choose from. My current favorite is the 130jlk at a mild 2820 from a 22 inch barrel with suppressor. I know some people get scared away by the initial cost of the brass, but this stuff is some of the best I have used. After reloading this stuff near 10x, I still haven't had to trim. Primer pockets are all still tight, and haven't split a neck yet. What more could you want?

490 yards is my longest pig kill so far, but I can routinely get hits out to 1200 with this little guy.

Sorry no group shots. I shoot for hits on steel or pigs.

Thought you were going with a surgeon action coug! I was looking forward to your report of it. Don't know many with them, matter of fact I can't think off the top of my head ANYONE I know that has one! :(

pdd614, BANG THA GONGS SON! Another fellow gong banger! I love it!

I would like to go with a sergon. not sure I can swing it.. I am a new and hopefully upcoming FLW pro and I have 4 tournaments coming up quickly,@ $2000 a pop. I will probably go with the good old Remington 700 because I have a donor action found for $250. one of the guys @ my local gun shop has one on a sergon action. but he dosent seem to think there's much of an advantage. especially when I believe they start out around $1400 for an action. I may be wrong I need to research a little better. one thing is for sure, you guys have me overly exited about this build.

pdd614,

Is that Vortex Razor rifle scope that you have there? How do you like it? I am trying to choose between the Vortex and Premier Reticles.

I have a vortex viper and love it OBTW Jerkface nice shooting. the same g that shoots the 6.5x47 on the sergon action shoots the razor. they are a Night Force dealer and a Vortex dealer. he's swares the vortex has better glass. in that they get more definition and color transfer from the razor. I consider him a very reliable resource.

Surgeon action

My build will have a Kelbly Atlas action. The Atlas starts at $700 and is about $800 by the time you are done with a magazine and Panda nut. A new Reminton 700 is around $400 and there is around another $400 in gunsmithing to get it trued and the lugs lapped, so you wind up at the same place.

I've been using VV N550 pretty much exclusively. It's so nice and clean and gives good velocity and accuracy.

I ran RL-15 through quickload to give you some ideas. Have not tried it in the 6.5x47

Code:

realy my smith only charges $100 to true and lapp. maybe he's taking me for a ride? what do you guys think of building this on a long action? I already have one of those to.. my smith doesn't think you get anything more from a short over a long he thinks if its trued its trued. no advantage over a long action I don't realy know. he likes to get people to build the 6.5x284 on a long action because of the high BC bullets.

Why are you wedded to a 700 action? This is 2011 and we have lots of options

Before you build a 700 action, pay to have the thing trued, replace the trigger and still have a bolt comprised of a bunch of soldered together pieces I would definitely go aftermarket.........OR at least look at what savages system has to offer. For around $400 the savage target action is the best thing going short of an aftermarket piece. The target accutrigger is as good as anything I've used factory or aftermarket and the floating bolt head will allow both lugs to bear. They're available in all sorts of bolt port combinations (mine is a right bolt left port)

Best of all unless you're using god's own gunsmith you can put one togeather yourself on your workbench that will shoot just as good or in many cases better than anything your local smith can build on a 700

Honestly if I were gonna "build" a 700 I'd put a savage bolt head and barrel nut on it anyway

thanks, I haven't used any of the N series powder. but I will have to try some. I've thought about it but I have loads worked up for nearly everything already. I am in the process with my 6.5-06AI but im using stuff like RL-25 and retumbo.

I've been looking at these but don't know where to buy one. For the price you mentioned you didn't get it from Savage. Any thoughts on where to buy one?

Looks like they've gone up a little since I last bought one but still a great deal for what you get.

I primarily deal with Scott Null at Savage Gunsmithing. If he doesn't have it, he can get it and at some very reasonable prices (Except his barrels are a little salty but still worth it) Not too many Smiths know their way around a savage as well as him and his crew.

I've not used those guys yet but I hear nothing but praise for their work.

the reason I do the 700s is because there are so many around if someone has one for 300 or less I buy it.. but im not just dead set on the Remington action. I have savage and I like them. I will check into the sergon actions a little deeper and the savage target.

They do very high quality work. And Scott is probably one of the nicest people you will ever speak to. Something rare for a gun smith all by itself right there :) It is rare that someone in that trade will send you to the "competition" for barrels or whatever because he may not have exactly what you want and do so with great appreciation. The man is a definite plus in this cutthroat business.

longsman, I know its a little off topic, but I have had both the premier 3-15 and this razor 5-20. The premier was a great scope while it worked, but when it went down Premier refused to fix it. I still have a bad taste in my mouth from that ordeal. So much for premiers life time warranty, I guess.
In addition to the warranty problems, I believe the ebr-3 reticle on the razor is a much better reticle than the gen2xr.
