Well, I never thought this would happen. The drive hub for my shell plate on my lock n load just snapped off on the down stroke. Hopefully Hornady customer service will be as helpful now as they have in the past!

I'm sure they will take care of it for you. Generally Hornady, Dillion & RCBS have great customer service unlike the other red company.

Yeah, I have enjoyed their customer service in the past. I have a competition this weekend I was in the process of loading for, never fails, you always break down at the most inconvenient time! I’ll hold out hope that they will over night me a part. At least I have figured out how to replace what was broken so I just need the replacement now!

Be ready to convince them that you can fix it easily. I had a plastic gear that broke on my Hornady Pistol Bullet Feeder, and the lady who took my call said it was company policy to send in the Feeder for repairs.

I told her it was just a drop in replacement, but she said it didn't matter....company policy. So I begged....;) Then I asked her to ask her supervisor. She came back on and relented. So be ready. Overnight? Wow....glad I didn't require that.

It all depends on who you talk to. If you're not getting what you want out of one of them hang up and call again. I don't know if he's still there but a gentleman by the name of Preston was always extremely helpful, its been a couple years since I called them though.

I’m all sorted out. As usual Hornady customer service did me right even though there was a little hesitation. FYI for anyone who may need a warranty item, they are running a week to process the claim and “some days” to ship, that’s what she said anyway. I ended up paying $21 to overnight so the hub should be here tomorrow and I can load for Saturday’s event!

What were you loading when this happened? Sounds like not enough lube being used if rifle rounds, causing excessive forces.

9mm, that’s all I load on that press, I have a single stage for rifle

The lady I talked to balked at first and told me my press wasn’t registered. I have used their customer service for other parts for this press and never had any issues. She said “I’m going to work with you on it this once but the press needs to be registered”

Hey, Popeye! Lay off the spinach!

That is a very surprising failure.

I know right? Sometimes I just don’t know my own strength I guess. The part looks like a pop metal or MIM part, maybe it’s cast but it just popped. I didn’t even give much force on the down stroke.

All metal products will have a few that will fail.
For this reason I don't trust the century old firearms.
All of my close to a hundred year old firearms are wall hangers. I don't trust the metal production way back them.

You can't knock the customer service at Hornady, Dillion and RCBS.

I contacted The Lee customer service one time and once was enough for me. I got rid of alot of Lee reloading items I had and only have very little left.

The part is either cast Al or zinc. You way want to spray some OS on the brass before loading. It will smooth things up and reduce the load. By what I see your using Lee dies by seeing the seating die, due to the cone shape. I prefer the Hornady with the TiNi insert for it reduced the required load by almost 1/2 what the see dies set I had. I sold the die set soon as my Hornady set arrived. But that was with the std sizing die not there taper FL Carbide sizing die. In either case lube will help. Without seeing the both sides of the fracture face it's are to speculate on the cause of failure. I have well over 100k through mine, but a much older production that had been upgraded to the EZ-eject.

Here is a better pic of the hub.

I am using lee dies for bullet seating and crimp only because they were already set up, I changed the sizing due to a Hornady and it’s much smoother than the lee die. I’ll probably swap them all to the Hornady set now since I have the whole press torn apart and will be setting everything back up anyway.

I ran into the same issue regarding "registering" my original HAP. I also had returned it for warranty work yet "it wasn't registered" when calling for repair parts 15 years later!

I went to the web site and reregistered about 15 Hornady tools, presses and dies!

Hopefully I don't have to use the warranty but 5hit happens!

Smiles,

I have a few RCBS dies that need parts along with one Hornady die set missing a piece.
I love their great customer service and fast turn around time.

As soon as I heard about the LnL's weak link hub, I ordered a spare. Just like the case retaining spring, Hornady should include a few hubs with every press. The cost to manufacture a hub is probably well under the cost to ship it.

My Hornady die is smoother but my Lee die sizes tighter, I decided I like the Lee better due to that.
Curious if one or the other of your two sizes the cases tighter.
