I do own 2 motorcycles however. The one I got was my first from 5 years ago. It was cheap and needed a lot of work and eventually I outgrew it and needed something bigger than a learner size dirt bike. I put more money and time into it, than its worth, so it doesn't seem worth selling. I've sold a couple along the way and have one other one now; my main Harley.

I also have 2 guitars once again one of them was my first from when I was a kid and I fixed it up and would likely fetch 100 dollars if that; even with its upgraded pickups and diy lacquer job; not worth selling. The other is my Les Paul. I am also on the look out for amps but I could only imagine having one other as a "back-up" or something even more high quality than the one I currently have if it were cheap enough & have my current one as a back-up.

The reason I mention all this is so I can understand if you're collecting just like others are into collecting stamps and the like; or if they all actually get fired. . .

Whenever I get the urge to build a collection and pick out which firearms would go together -- I remember how I barely have time or money for ammo for the one rifle I have and I'd just as soon pay off my credit card or student loan or maybe even put some more into my bank account or 401k.

Merry christmas all. too bad i didn't get another rifle for christmas. I could've added to my collection :)

Sounds like an advanced case of arrested imagination, but may not be fatal if treated promptly. Try to get help ASAP.

Merry Christmas

I couldn't imagine owning less than 4-5 guns. I have 5 differant guns just for ccw since my clothing dictates which one i carry.

I have a problem with accumulating toys. I keep finding another gun I want even though I have more than I can shoot (and I only have about 13-14, unlike a lot of other guys around here). I started playing guitar about a month ago when my brother in law gave me a hollow body electric, and I already feel the need for an acoustic and a solid body electric also. I used to fly R/C airplanes and I built them faster than I could fly them. I think it's some sort of weird compulsive pack rat thing.

You really need therapy.

Actually, I have a decent selection of guns, but the huge majority of them were bought at great prices. My dad was really frugal and would hardly ever pay what a gun was actually worth. Just takes time to accumulate them with that strategy.

I'm about to go to the hunting camp, and I am taking 6 guns with me. Overkill? No way. Seek professional help.

I think 5-6 guns are the bare minimum for a halfway decent personal arsenal:
  • .22 rifle
  • .22 pistol
  • shotgun
  • major caliber centerfire bolt action rifle
  • major/intermediate caliber semi rifle
  • SD caliber centerfire pistol
And that's a fairly no frills list.

I have a Fender American Standard Telecaster bought new in 1989. Gunmetal blue, rosewood fretboard. Hasn't been played a whole lot. I'm considering selling it so I can buy another gun. I have less than 50 guns, so I am really needy in that respect.

only owning 4-5 guns is like going golfing with just a driver, a pitch, a putter, and a 4 iron. Sure, you can do it, but why limit yourself?;)

I had several "hobbies" at one time. I sat down one day and narrowed everything down. I was into R/C aircraft, video games, shooting, hunting, off road sports, ...just about anything else with a motor. I now maintain my guns, load ammo, and save for more guns. Guns are one of the few items that i feel will last a lifetime, provide entertainment and utility, and will hold value. Granted, not many of my firearms are considered rare or "high-dollar", but several have increased in value and they are a source of pride. YMMV

My first gun was given to me at 13. I am 35 today and I own 12 now. That is a little more than 1 gun every 2 years. A couple were gifts. Every time I move I can't help but notice that they are the only things I own that hold there value.
Even my retirement accounts seem to go down. I make decent money and almost max out my 401k. I can't imagine dumping the rest of my income to pay down my mortgage. Buying guns seems like a healthy way to spend my disposable income.

I couldn't imagine owning less than 4-5 of any one particular model of gun. Take for example a person who CCWs the Glock 27.

If you have one, you need a backup.
That means you need 2 Glock 27s.

What if your primary Glock 27 breaks? You use your back up Glock 27. But, that would mean you now have no backup. You are using it. That means you need 3 Glock 27s as the bare minimum.

Who wants to try to get by with the bare minimum? So, you need 4 Glock 27s.

It is that simple.

Honestly, 006, why even post this, where do you think this thread's gonna go? Posting a thread about how you can't see yourself owning over 4-5 guns on a board where people post pictures of entire rooms of their house filled wall to wall with guns (see gun pictures thread page 3, guy must have a thousand guns). All you're gonna get is people telling you otherwise lol. It's like going on a video game forum saying you can;t see yourself owning more than 3 games, or a baseball cards forum saying you only want a few seasons worth, or a....................

I dont understand the nature of the post. I enjoy playing video games, but I wouldnt buy just one game for say the atari, and suggest that now i have every game I could ever want or need.

Although Pong was pretty good......

Four to five guns seems awfully minimalist to me. The way I see it, if you're like most of us here, (hunter/plinker/target shooter/CCW), you'd want at least an airgun or rimfire for cheap, quiet target shooting and small game hunting. You want a shotgun for birds and rabbits. A full size rifle for big game and a handgun for defense and concealed carry.

That's four guns right there without even getting into EBR's, black powder, pistol hunting, target rifles or backup pistols. Not to mention the fact that for good reasons you might want different models of those four basic guns for different types of hunting or shooting. For example, if I go duck hunting I want a pump or an autoloader. For that I only really need one choke and I want all three shots. For rabbits or upland birds I'd much rather have a double. And while it can be done, who wants to hunt coyotes with the same rifle you use for elk?

If you had put ALL your money in guns and ammunition, instead of a 401K, Social Security, other retirement plan, or playing the lottery, you would not have lost 1/3 of it several years ago. You'd be gaining 5-20% every year, depending on what you bought.

Okay, you've got a good start there. Now go into each category:

.22 rifle;

  • You need a good bolt rifle with scope.
  • And you have to have a Marlin 39 or a Winchester 9422 -- hell, get both
  • Everyone needs a Winchester or Remington pump
  • An M1922 Springfield should be on everyone's list
  • A good single shot -- say an old Stevens Favorite
.22 pistol;
  • A good auto -- either a Ruger or Browning is a must.
  • A classic -- either a Colt Woodsman or a S&W M41
  • A good DA revolver -- Colt or S&W
  • A Ruger Single Six
Shotgun;
  • First of all, a good duck and geese gun -- say a Remington 870.
  • A light weight double -- a Lefevre or LC Smith for upland game
  • A rifled barrel gun -- maybe a dedicated 870 -- for deer
  • A shortbarreled gun for home defense.
major caliber centerfire bolt action rifle
  • A basic deer rifle -- say a Winchester Model 70 in .243.
  • An elk rifle -- another Winchester Model 70 in .30-06, 7mm Rem Mag, .300 Win Mag or .338 Win Mag
major/intermediate caliber semi rifle
  • This is easy -- an M1 Garand or an M1A.
  • Add an EBR (M16 variant)
SD caliber centerfire pistol
  • You have to have an M1911
  • You need a good revolver in .357 Mag
  • A pocket pistol would be nice, just to drop in your pocket when you head out the door.
And not on your list:
  • A good varmit rifle -- say a Savage in .223 Rem
  • A hunting handgun -- I like a Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt

Now that is what I call a bare minimum, no-frills list.

I couldn't imagine owning more than 4-5 guns

That needs fixed... how about:

"I couldn't imagine owning more than 4-5 shotguns"

"I couldn't imagine owning more than 4-5 rifles"
"I couldn't imagine owning more than 4-5 pistols"
"I couldn't imagine owning more than 4-5 revolvers"
"I couldn't imagine owning more than 4-5 C&Rs"

Nah... that's only 20-25, it's still not right :D
