Cabela's has an 1851 Navy Sheriff .44 caliber on sale for $129. I could not resist and ordered it, along with some .454 hornady balls and some wads.

Anyone had experience with the Navy Sheriff? Load recommendations?

Thanks.

I would suggest that you check the cylinder stop (bolt) for fitment when you receive it, mine was too wide, and ended up buggering up the cylinder pretty badly when cocked.

Take a 6" piece of 1" or 1 1/4" hardwood dowel (shovel handle, chair rung, etc.) and drill a 3/8" hole in one end about 2 1/2" deep. Then bevel (taper) the drilled end a bit. You now have a "cheater" to slide over the stubby little rammer to give yourself more leverage for when you seat a ball without gouging the palm of your hand or wrist. The slip on cheater makes those little pop guns a whole lot more fun to load and shoot. I have a US Marshall I am taking to a shoot tomorrow with its all important "accessory".

Oh, i forgot to mention, mine is not the sheriff model, it's the standard 7 1/2 inch barreled model confederate .44 cal, but the issue could possibly be the same, I think there's a tutorial somewhere on this website. the standard load that I use is 22 grains.
