My new purchase will be here in a few days and I can't wait to share pictures!

All along I've been saying I wasn't planning to carry, but I've changed my mind. Well, I should say I want to get my permit so that if and when I want to carry, I can.

Does anyone have first-hand knowledge of the classes that are available in Minnesota, and if so, could you share your recommendations (private messages are fine). A quick google search showed that several are available, and I'm sure they vary greatly in quality so I would really welcome any actual testimonials.

Another thing is, I want to get a holster for it for my purse or to put in my saddlebag - any particularly good ones out there? I'm not sure how to judge what makes one better than another, but discreet is good, and something that will protect the gun (you should see the stuff in my purse) would also be desirable. I will not be carrying on my person.

This is better than Christmas and much harder to wait for. :)

I agree, Christmas is soooo overrated ;) :neener:

Have you tried asking around at your local range? They may have some helpful information for you

Good luck

Told you so! :neener:

Not a good idea. Your purse or handbag are often the target of an assault, so you need to carry on your person unless you want your handgun to be the first thing stolen in a sudden attack.

I'm a semi-auto guy, so your best advice about holsters will come from the revolver guys.

There are actually clothing designers who cater to the concealed carry market. coronadoleather.com is one that I've used. Each jacket/vest is made to order for your measurements, and includes little easy access slits that are invisible to others, but provide instant access to your piece. Leather is pretty much unisex, and they'll work with you to provide exactly what you want.
If you're not the leather jacket/vest type, there are other makers of outerwear out there. I like the vests, because they're not out of place with a variety of clothing styles.

This photo shows me in a vest with a Kimber compact 1911 on the left and two mags on the right. I like this stuff, but, you may not... This one of sort of western style, but they have more urban stuff also. They work with you.

Soooo.... Watcha buy?
Ain't telling. :p I want to get it first and make sure it's as advertised before I show it to everybody.

Not a good idea.
Sigh. I really do not want to go around with a gun on me. Maybe I need to take a martial arts course so if somebody tried to grab my purse I could whack him first. I like your vest Kodiak. It would be great for when I'm riding. I mean, even if I weren't carrying a gun, I just like the way it looks.

A few years ago a female officer in a nearby agency was carrying her off duty in her purse, and placed the purse on the floor of an establishment she was frequenting. Someone stole the purse, and of course, the weapon. It was recovered a short time later, but the situation was an embarassing one for her, I am sure.
Off body carry is risky for anyone. Dressing around a gun is a PITA, but one that can be gotten used to. Women who wear pants a lot can make use of an ankle rig, of course depending on what you bought. If you are set on purse carry, buy a purse which was designed for that purpose. They are sold by some holster makers. I think Galco makes one or two, and I'm sure there are others.

It's just an old ulu knife made from a broken saw by somebody's gramps in the old days, with a horn (caribou, moose?) handle almost black with age. The long bone behind it is an oosik about 18 inches long with carved ends - the bone from a walrus penis! The natives used those for fish clubs or for knocking the heads of seals.

K'Beer - I love the Coronado Leather products. I had not heard of them before - great tip, thanks.
p.s. You ought to be a model for their catalogue. Or are you already?:)

I think they want younger, thinner, taller men for models. That's actually a picture taken about 5 years ago by my girlfriend (now wife), to show her mother what passed for Alaskan fashion - she was actually poking fun at me, though I didn't catch on till later.

I'm not associated with Coronado leather, I just like their stuff. When you call down there, you usually speak directly to the owner and he'll tailor your purchase for your exact measurements, AND for your carry gun. They're not cheap, but I think the price is reasonable for the quality.

+1 on not having your CC weapon in a purse. Purses have a tendency to be snatched, lifted, forgotten...etc.

Someone I knew had her CC weapon stolen from the back room of her store. This was an employee only area but it was the busy Christmas season and someone managed to walk back (caught on camera but never caught the guy).

Also, fumbling with a purse is probably the last thing you want to do if your life was at stake.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you got.

I figure you'll come to learn where the best place to carry it is on your own. Pretty much like everyone else here did . . . .

Miss Lead,
I applaude you for your decision. My wife chose to do the same a few month's ago.
The greatest advantage of being female is you have so many more options of layered clothing than a man does. A lady can walk around all day long with a blouse untucked and nobody will think anything of it. it's very, very easy to conceal a handgun that way.

One thing you can do to reduce the chance of having your purse snatched it to run a very fine steel cable thru the strap and clamp it with small cable clamps. Nobody will ever be the wiser, and a thief can't break or cut your purse strap either.

I'm going to recommend that you go to this website and see what Kathy (PAX) recommends.
Kathy specializes in training women in concealed carry and handling firearms.

You'll find excellent advice that'll help answer your questions and needs pretty easily.

Congrats on your acquisition. I can't wait to see what you have.
Best wishes, Gregory

She has been VERY patient
You can say that again. That was the longest it took me to purchase something ever.

But this waiting for it to arrive is going to do me in.

Yes to the Cornered Cat. I have read a few things on that website but need to spend more time there - it is loaded with good information and presented really well.
