I didn't think I was a plinker, but maybe I am after all

Sometimes it gets boring being able to just clear the rack over and over. Move back 200 yards from it and use a .22 LR and you feel a great sense of accomplishment if you can clear it without a miss and it’s the same target…

That reminds me of a three tiered plate rack we have in one of the pistol cells at my club. It starts with larger plates in the first row. When you knock one down, there is a smaller triangle behind it. When you knock that down, there's an even smaller target behind that. Fun but rather frustrating at times. It is pretty thrilling when you knock those small little ones down in the back.

But then we would have to get into the differences in caliber between plinking and blasting??

Can one "blast" with a 22lr?

IMO, no, but you certainly can with a 22 magnum pistol. Noisy little critters, with a fireball to boot. I consider plinking to be when I am shooting just for fun at about any type of target and of course I am trying to hit said target every time I fire.

The range I do most of my shooting at is just a flat rock about 125 yards long in the woods with a mike if trees behind it. You have to bring a table or chair or targets and stand or whatever you need as there is nothing there. Sometimes we bring fruit or veggies to shoot, sometimes we just pickup shotgun shells to shoot at. We have also used rifle brass as targets as well and also sticks and branches, rocks, bottles, and anything that will react when hit. It may be plinking, but as you move the targets further out it becomes challenging, especially shooting a grape off a 308 case past 10 yards. I prefer plinking, but there is an accuracy requirement involved in every round fired for me.

There's three of us that go to the local desert and plink. We set up steel targets, some clay pidgeons etc. But, we plink for accuracy. Heck we shoot the bull more than anything else, but still shoot a lot. We jokingly call ourselves MLC: Mojave Lever Crew. With a good assortment of S/A's included. Much fun plinking! Oh..22lr included.

Late to the party, but I view it as three different "types" of shooting. In my opinion, you have precision, plinking, and blasting.

Precision is where you are going for precise shots. Best of the best.

Plinking is where you are going out and not necessarily using the most perfect loads ever, but more just using it as range time to keep a feel for your firearms and keep up with good shooting fundamentals.

Then you get blasting, which is just blasting away carelessly, or "glorified noise making" as you put it.
