False dichotomy. Not an either or. The government doesn't provide solutions, only more restrictions. The government doesn't pay for things, tax payers pay for the government to pay for things. We don’t' need another government bureaucracy, the NRA does a great job at educating gun enthusiasts, and they keep the government restrictions in check. I took my ccw class through a NRA sponsored basic pistol training class, and it was what I would expect what one would take to get their training requirements. Lets keep the government restrictions out of it.

Maybe this is a serious topic and you really want our input, but the way you laid out the poll, this qualifies as the dumbest poll of 2012.

I support education and training. I DO NOT support government control or mandate of such. I did not vote in your poll because the only options you provide present (I suspect deliberately) a FALSE PROPOSITION. Neither answer is the obvious, logical, or necessary alternative to the other. You present many of us (willfully, perhaps) with only two options: agree with you, or embrace something unacceptable. Pretending or insisting that there is no third option (that NEITHER option is necessary or desirable) is intellectually dishonest.

People have the right to own a gun and also have the right to seek training or not seek training. People can learn to shoot responsibly and well without actually taking a course. I've taken training courses but many of my friends have not and they are still responsible gun owners that can put rounds on target.

The only government mandated training should be for those in LE or the military.

Who's money will be stolen to pay for this?

More statists insisting government should dictate to the masses.

So, your belief is, the government should require training (by the government) to use firearms, and confiscate firearms from all who refuse such training?

Did I get that right?

I don't think most members here will agree that MORE government control is a good thing.

Oh, and I refuse to vote in your poll.

Yeah, the poll is pretty worthless without a 'neither' or 'other' choice. Both presented choices represent some pretty stupid ideas.

neither
Govt. has no place here, another 8 post anti. Don't fall into the trap of having 2 bad choice to pick from. the tide washed these folks in with the tragedy in Colorado, we don't need to feed their cause.
This is a leading question you get to choose from 2 wrong answers.
We aren't buying what you are selling.

Voluntary training, sure, at a local level. Federal training? Never. Gun confiscation? Them's fightin' words to free people. What do you think jump started the American Revolution?

No vote from me.

If you vote either way you are a supporter of more gun control by government - NO thanks !

I am a supporter of gun control. I believe guns should be controlled through education and routine training. Therefore, I have written to my local representatives to push forward the the Firearms Training Act.

The Firearms Training Act would provide free training and education about firearms to anyone who would like such training. The government would pay for programs which would train the firearm owner on how to operate their firearms in a responsible and safe manner. Furthermore, such an act would fund and promote national competitions where firearms owners could practice what they learned in the training.

It is my belief our society has a problem in that most owners are not trained or educated enough to be able to operate their firearms. A government sponsored program to educate and train would help alleviate random accidents. It would also help folks stay out of legal trouble. Many people cant afford such training so its important that our government fund and pay to train the owners and to encourage them to compete in national competitions.

In my opinion, this is the most sensible form of gun control. I will now post a poll where members of The High Road can let everyone know how they feel about the Firearms Training Act.
This still doesn't solve anything in my book...anyone that would take the training, likely already knows how to shoot. Secondly, this gives an avenue for nutjobs that shoot up movie theaters a place to go and learn how to keel even more efficiently...yay. Just because you train a nut case how to shoot a gun, doesn't change the fact that he's still a nut case.

Secondly...it's not free and the "government" isn't paying for anything...taxpayers are. There are plenty of things this government needs to use tax money for other than this. So, maybe they offer the class, but you pay for it...oh wait...that already exists...why do we need government to do this for us again?

You left out the option for "Both options A and B are ridiculous"

The problem with government funded training is it’s one very small step to the government deciding you didn’t meet their training requirements and can’t be trusted to own guns anymore – please turn them all in and feel free to reapply never.

While we're at it, obesity is rampant and killing even more people. Let's start by reigning in those obscenely large soft drinks. The people don't know what's best for them, so clearly the answer is more government and regulations.

Bloomberg for president!
