I own and carried a Taurus 85ul (23 oz) and just purchased a S&W 642. Other than weight they're close in size, yet when I wear the smith, it's more comfortable. It just seems to "fit" better. I have no idea why because they're about the same width, lenght etc. Strange. Any ideas?

FWIW I never had a problem with the Taurus, it's accurate, reliable and served me well for many years. It's a keeper.

is the 642 slightly longer? maybe it has better support against your side and more stable...

or as gmh said it could be you're used to knowing you have the 642 on your hip

23 vs. 15 ounces isn't much in absolute terms but it's a full 50% difference.

I've found that a cheapo belt seems to magnify weight differences with an IWB holster - how are you carrying it?

Hawk - right now in pocket carry.

I did a doubletake when I saw your name. I had a very good friend in Nam who's nickname was Hawk. Unfortunately he's no longer with us, but your name sorta gave me a little flash back.

Stay well and good shooting.

As you have discovered and others who carry every day know, a little weight can make a big difference.

That is why I can only roll my eyes when I hear somone suggest that an sp101 is a better choice for daily Concealed carry than a 642.

I have both and the 642 gets carried the sp101 never gets carried, 8 or 9 ounces and slight dimensional differences can be major when it comes to comfortably, reliably, concealing a firearm all day, every day, for Years.

I have a Colt Detective Special. When I bought it, the old man had three 2" D frames with him -- a 1970 Detective Special, an 80's era DS, and an Agent.

I should have bought all three, but I only had the cash for the Detective Special.

Love it. Carried it, and still do anytime I need a small belt gun. But I never carry it in my pocket.

I have a 642-2. I carry it every day, everywhere. It is slightly smaller, and weighs 50% less. That is huge when you are talking about pocket carry. There's a reason why S&W sells more of that model than anything else they make.

Real people, in the real world, really carry them.
