Opinions on Taurus 605?

Can't believe I did this 'cause I'm a loyal S&W owner...but the time was right (I had the cash & it seemed like a decent deal, $275). Bought a 2 year old Blue Taurus Model 605 .357 2" that had about 20 rounds fired through it. Now I do not own any Smiths with the lock, this on does have the stupid little key lock in the hammer. I really thought this would be a good revolver for my wife because the 24 oz weight was down the middle between my 642-1 & my Model 66-2 2.5" (the one she really likes to shoot).
So, are the Taurus' safe, reliable, etc.?

Here is my 3 inch 605. I like it a lot. But my wife likes it better.

Yes it has been safe and reliable. trigger pull is a little long, but you get good at knowing the break point.

I'm 50/50

I purchased a blued two inch for my wife. That snubbie is actually flawless. The trigger is almost as good as my S&W 686 and accuracy is fantastic for a snub. Even a lot of my gun-snob friends like it. Worked so well that I bought one in stainless for myself. This is where things went bad.
The first time back to Taurus was allegedly timing. Second problem I found myself; plunger spring. Corrected faster and cheaper through my 'smith. Third problem was that the transfer bar ( or whatever it's called, don't care at this point. A little frustrated.) actually broke. This firearm has less than a hundred rounds through it. I'm disappointed and don't trust it. I just got it back and have been drivin' my missus up a wall snapping it with A-Zooms to check it. Will shoot it this weekend.
I have a CZ-Compact on consignment. When that goes I'm getting a SP101. Then the stainless 605 will be next on consignment. The difference between the two amazes me. I heard Taurus was hit'n'miss. Guess I learned.

Just picked up a lightly used Taurus 605 .357 Magnum in 2" with Hogue grips. My wife complains that most of my guns are too big for her. This one was just right. It has a trigger that I would call pretty good. Not as nice as my Colts or S&Ws but pretty good nontheless. Seems well built and it shoots nice too.
The Hogue grip finger grooves are too close together for me but for my wife it is just right. I keep Cor-Bon 38+Ps in it for her.

Had one years ago, rode with me at a security job concealed, (this was pre CZ. ), good little wheelgun, great shooter with the 3" tube. Went to someone who really needed an inesxensive sidearm, and I could afford to let it go at a gimme price for a buddy.

I just picked up a 2'' blue Taurus 605 357 mag on sat for the wife. I must have got a good one cause its awesome and the trigger is almost as smooth as my S&W. My wife shoots it well with Rem 38spl 125gr +P's, and I didn't think the 357mags were that bad at all. I am really impressed with this snub!!

I've had a stainless 605 for a number of years, and can't say enough about it. It is a shooter, and easy to carry. Its lightweight would tend to make one think it would recoil sharply with full magnum loads, but it handles it quite well.
I also own a Taurus 445 (.44 spl.) that I've had to send back due to the fact the cylinder/barrel gap was so tight, it would bind up after a few lead rounds. They opened it up a bit, and it performs perfectly now. The 605 is also very tight, but has not caused any problems, and I have SHOT this little gun a lot.
I like both of these guns.

I carry my 605SS daily. It has been nothing but reliable. I've put hundreds of rounds through it. The trigger was a little heavy at first, but the more rounds the better it gets. Houge monogrips made a huge difference in how it handles, and are worth changing to.

I have a stainless .357 2". Have owned about two months, and shot several hundred rounds through it.
It's been touch and go so far, I'd always been a S&W guy, but the price was right on this pistol, on that day, and I bit.
The fit and finish aren't up to S&W standards, obviously, that's really not a complaint, at this price. Accuracy is pretty darn good, considering how short a time I've owned the piece. No misfires, or mechanical problems of any kind----it's just me learning to shoot a new piece.
You did okay--it's a good carry piece.

i have a 3"mag 410 judge thats 100% but the first judge i bought(1/08)stank on ice.

I got a 3" stainless 605 last Summer and have been real happy with it. Great for popping cans at 25 yards with 38s. Controllable with everything and not unpleasant with 145 grain loads and down. I carry with 125 grainers or Glasers. I don't feed it a steady diet of Magnums, and I wouldn't with a Smith either. That's Ruger country.

I went and got my wife some extras for her new 605. 2 speed loaders, a nice soft holster for in the purse or IWB, and last but not least to her...hot pink grips!! It makes me smile cause she has always been a good shot and kinda liked pistols, but now she loves this peice and is genuinely exited. I may have a new partner in crime instead of having her tell me I am a gun junkie!!lol. She thinks the dark blueing on the pink is bad ass.

I also got an unrelaible 605. Multiple cylinders of .357 ended up binding the cylinder. It's a safe queen now.

I wasn't limp wristing it and I doubt the 125gr really "jumped" out of the case but I don't feel comfortable carrying it. If I can't get the basic load and two reloads in a gunfight it's a range gun.

When I get some time I'll retest it with .38+P and if that fails it will get traded.

So Far, So Good

Got mine back from Taurus and had it out on Sunday. Fifty rounds of .38 went well. Didn't have any .357s. Feels completely different, Like they changed out everything. Before I couldn't make it past four cylinders without problems. Time will tell as far as trusting it yet. I'll find out after a lot more rounds.
To answer your question Bill, $359. SP101s run $439. The shop I go to lowered their price on the Ruger, used to be $479.

Have owned a 3" blued model for ~5 years. Reliable, accurate, lots of flexibility on loads and carry options.

I think the 605 is one of Taurus' better guns.

I have a 2" blued that I bought new a few months back. Shoots well & a decent trigger. It really likes the Winchester White box 125gr. HP +p. I have about 300 rounds of that thru it. It's OK with a full mag load but it does let you know you are shooting 357's and not 38's.

Ive had good luck with mine. It was my wife carry gun and the one she qualified for CHL with. Then she found a Smith 673 with pink grips and traded it in, I wish she did not do that. I would take that 605 back over the Smith any day.

That's the reason I bought my wife pink grips for her 605, cause I do not want her to get rid of it. In fact I am keeping my eye out for a 6 shot revolver about the same size for the wife, and then I can put the original grips back on the 605 and use it for my BUG. I really like having a 357mag that can be carried in the pocket, a true pocket cannon!!

Whatever they did, it seems to be good now.For now I'll see how long this lasts.The work order is still at my FFLs, so I need that to know exactly what was done. Maybe they finally got the part that caused all the problems from the get go. Wish I knew about the Ruger price drop at my usual shop. For that small of a price difference, I'd of got a SP101. Guess I should try not to sound bitter, I've purchased a lot of inexpensive firearms over the years, and this is the first time I got bitten.
