I drank the AR koolade today for the first time.

hey Milk, congrats on the purchase again

it doesn't have to be run wet, but if you do so, you can go long periods without cleaning, which can be useful if you are shooting over 1000 rounds per day in a class and don't have time to clean. Obviously, if you have the opportunity to clean, there's nothing wrong with that, so long as you don't damage the rifle by over-zealous cleaning.

you can vary the buffer weight to delay the unlocking of the bolt slightly, so it trades lower chamber pressure (at the time of unlocking) for more reciprocating mass. Generally, you shouldn't go throwing different buffers in there unless you know what you're doing and need the extra weight, but at the same time, it probably won't break anything either. in fact, the change will be pretty subtle.

It's a Troy fixed rear sight as seen here.
You have it mounted incorrectly.
When it is in the correct position the rear of the sight should be inline with the forward edge of the indent for the charging handle latch.

Yeah, I moved it forward one notch because in the furthest rear position the Troy sight is half unsupported by the ArmaLite rail. Just a personal preference of mine.

Welcome to the Black Rifle disease club
I think one person earlier suggested Slip EWL. It is the lube I have settled on for now. I even use it on the NiB BCG even though many people say run it dry.
Just keep the bolt well lubed and enjoy the heck out of shooting your new toy :D

I don't know yet how to disassemble/clean the gas system towards the barrel.
No need to clean that at all; due to the temperature, pressure, and gas velocity in the gas block and gas tube, any carbon buildup there is self-limiting.

Up until now, I haven't shot any .223 ammo of my own. In general is it a clean ammo or dirty? How many rounds before I have to clean the gas system thoroughly?
If you keep the action a little wet, you can go a long time between any cleaning at all (would you believe fifteen thousand rounds?) I last cleaned mine after 300 rounds or so of Tula steel-case, but that was just because I wanted it clean, not because it wouldn't have kept running dirty.

Do Armalite uppers have a shorter than standard rail-space before the T1 position I wonder?
I hadn't noticed that before, but it definitely looks like it. Look at Chicharrones pic on the first page of this thread and notice that his top rail doesn't even come close to the cutout for the CH latch. The top rail should terminate at the mid point of the CH latch cutout.

Not so... I just compared the AmaLite upper to a Daniel Defense upper. The rails are the same.

Yeah, but look at the particular upper in Chicharrones pic. His upper is definitely different.

Maybe this will shed some light.

The rail section on my ArmaLite built in 2013 looks like the one from the Truth About Guns version. Apparently ArmaLite modified it along the way. Perhaps to give more gloved hand room around the charging handle?

Drank the koolaid....I like that, and for some people it is very accurate statement on how some feel about the rifles.

IMHO they are what they are....be they in 223 or some other caliber. It 223 they are quite fun to play with....you may not go head over heals in love with them and think that they are the best rifle in the world, but they are sure fun.
