A few days ago, by chance I found my dad's "back up" set of keys for the gun locker and ammo boxes (I am 17 btw).

Should I:

Tell him I know
or
Keep it secret

Right now, I'd prefer to keep my knowledge to my self. I spend a very good amount of time home alone, and its more comforting to know that I can access weapons if I need them. On the other hand, if I tell him I know, he'll probably move the keys somewhere else.

It may be in your best interest to tell him, get a little trust between the two of you. Honesty is much admired where I come from. It may help you bond with your father.

Then again you could make a copy of the keys and then tell him you found them.:D :scrutiny:

I'm not all that sure that this question can be properly answered by polling HighRoaders.
Seems like you've got to make a personal choice. If you tell him, he might appreciate your honesty and think about whether or not you're ready for the responsibility of having access to the weapons. Or he might just be annoyed and rehide it somewhere better.

I have to wonder, though ... you say that you are leaning towards keeping it a secret, but you felt it was necessary to ask a group of people what they thought on the issue. Are you looking for some people to tell you otherwise?

Without knowing you or your dad, this is only an opinion. I think you should tell him you found the keys.

"Hey Dad, I found your gun locker keys while I was searching for my [whatever]. I left them where they are, but I just thought you might want to know."

That show of responsibility, and that's what it is, might go a long way toward him getting you your own firearm sooner rather than later or not at all. You cannot predict the future and say he will not find out that you have access to the keys. Who knows, he might say something like, "Well, I'm glad you told me. Let's leave them where they are. Just promise me you won't get into them without my permission." A show of honesty and the resultant trust goes a long way.

For you to post this, almost makes me think you are NOT old enough, or mature enough to be around guns unsupervised. Still, I am not the judgmental kind, so my advise is to do what you already know is the right thing, and tell your Father. If nothing else, this will let him know that you ARE mature, and deserving of more trust. Picture his reaction when he finds out (and trust me, he will) that you were sandbagging him.

Sorry man, but if he trusted you he would have SHOWN you where they were. For some reason he chose not to. He does not want you to know where they are. You should tell him that you know, and hopefully talk about why he does not want you to know where they are.

I've got to figure if parents can keep secrets, so can kids.

If I had a nearly grown child, he or she would know all about guns, where they're kept, and how to save his or her life with one if necessary.

I already knew that you found the keys, Jason. I moved them to a better spot.

Better luck next time.

LORD! How low our society has sunk. Not assuming that the kids are responsible enough to stay out of trouble. Too many Hollywood infoprop movies.

Gun safes are to keep burglers (and assorted children of philistine women who visit the wife) out of the guns and not to keep out the 'citizens' of the house.

Seriously though, what better place to hide your spare keys but on the key ring of a trusted family member?

Mal, I wasn't criticizing the last boy scout. Rather I was critiquing the 'popular culture' which assumes the worst possible reasons for having a gun safe. I think TLBS and his family probably have a much more normal than average relationship.

But I do wonder what sort of Hollywood propaganda effect caused the keys to be hidden from TLBS in the first place. TLBS should have been told where they were and not have to stumble upon them.

Just call me an old grouchpot, the last guy in the world who lets his kids keep all the guns and knives they want but doesn't let them have condoms and bongs... :uhoh:

Scout:

Yer Dad trusts you, so I'll wager you've earned it.

Just keep in mind that the problems around access to guns generally isn't between father & son, but between son & son's potentially less than responsible friends.

The next step's the harder part: keeping it under your hat, & just between you and Dad.

Sorry man, but if he trusted you he would have SHOWN you where they were.

It may have nothing to do with trust of his son. The old man may be just trying to abide by state law which make it a crime to leave unsecured firearm accessible to a minor, which would include any minor that may pass through the home. Unless there is a reason that we don't know about, and that is why the keys are kept hidden.

Tell your old man you found them, and go from there. ;)

My son, now 16, would find where I stashed mine and he always let me know it.
I appreciated the honesty, and I'm sure he knows I trust him and they aren't locked up to keep him out.
