My last few posts about a woods walkabout pistol have begotten alo of good info....I found a S&W Mountain Gun in 41 Mag today and the nice guys at the local gun store put it in the back fo me until the funds appear! Anyone with personal experience with this platform please give me your honest thoughts.

Now that is a nice weapon and the power level is perfect for a walkabout. The more I shoot my .41 Blackhawk the more I like it, I'll be looking for a double action counterpart for it when the budget allows.

I have three of the the stainless 41 magnum Mountain Guns. These were made in 1998.This is my daily carry piece. All three of mine have been very accurate and 100% trouble free.My 41 magnums are a joy to shoot and all of them have several thousand rounds through them.I am a better shot with the 41 mag than I ever was with 357 mag,44 mag or 45 colt revolvers. For me the 41 magnum is the perfect handgun.
The only downside is that 41 mag ammo is very expensive. However I reload most of my ammo. The 41 magnum is very capable on game too.I have killed deer, wild boar, wild dogs, coyotes and smaller game without a problem. My target load and general use load is a 210 grain LSWC loaded to 1000 fps.My kids also shoot the 41 mag same bullet as above but loaded to about 700 fps.For hunting I use a 250 grain cast WFN bullet with a gascheck at 1300 fps.Personal Defense load is Winchester 175 grain Silvertip HP.
Get the 41 mag.You will be well pleased. If you do not reload try Georgia Arms for good but cheaper ammo for the 41 mag.

41Mag Fan,

The stainless is what I really wanted but am making due with the blued. The latest Guns and Ammo has the 45 LC version and the author sent it to the performance center for bead blasted nickel finish. I might send mine to Robar for NP3 or Roguard. She is definitely getting a Fiber Optic front sight and a set of Pachmayer decelerators. By the way sorry for any typos, I am at work and not used to the time. I am usually out of here at 0200 hours. What kind of powder/bullet/primer combo are you using? I reload rifle only right now and definitley see the need (money) for handloading this one. I want to put an inexpensive practice round together that could double for a defense round. Figure 170-200 grain HP at 1000 fps? Suggestions.

The primer that I use is Federal.I use Unique powder and Georgia Arms 210 grain lswc bullets for my target and all purpose load.My hunting load is 21 grains of H-110 and a 250 grain cast WFN with gascheck from Beartooth Bullets.Until recently i used handloads for my defense loads too.My defense loads were a Speer 200 grain half jacket hollowpoint loaded over 16.5 grains of 2400.This load was chroned, but should be around 1050 to 1100 fps. This bullet is very accurate no matter what the powder or loading. The lswc loaded the 900 to 1000 fps also will be a good defense load. The origional police load for the 41 magnum was a 210 lswc at 950 to 975 fps.Have had good results using any cast bullet that I have ever tried. Also had good luck with Hornady 210 grain XTP,the Speer 220 grain bullet and with the Nosler 210 grain jhp.

Good buy

I just purchased a used S&W 629-4 44 mag Mountain Gun and can't find any problem with it. I thought the thing would kick like a mule, but it's not as bad as I expected. The 41 should serve you well, enjoy it.

I've got a couple Mountain Guns. One in .45 acp and the other in .45 colt.

Very nice guns and a lot of fun to shoot...

Joe

I have a 44 and a 45 LC (before you yell, that is what the box is marked and what the barrel is marked) in mountain guns, I like them alot, Part of me wishes for a Fixed sight version for even more lightweight and "beatabiliy."
