Well, I did a search to see if anyone here on THR has an opinion concerning the S&W M13 (13-4, actually) but didn't have any luck. I found one at a local shop today for $339, no box and it didn't have the original grips. Should I wait and pick up a model 19 or 586? Your experiences, please.

I would love to have the 4" blued model back that I had many years ago. It was a great service style revolver that had a lot of utility to it. I've been looking for another one for a while now, but still haven't found the right one yet.

BB,
Here's a little nostalgia to do your heart good!

How much would a period correct set of grips go for for the model 13-4? The one I'm looking at is wearing a set of Pachmayr's at present.

The M13 is a good gun and you can replace the Pachmayr's with anything that fits you. A set of original stocks for it may run you from 25 to 50 bucks depending on condition and where and when you can find a set. They aren't rare though. You can find them on EBay. Numrich and CDNN sometimes have them also.

Good gun, basically a model 10 in .357mag. Treat it as a .38spl that can fire .357mag occasionally rather than the other way around and you will be happy.

Well, I went back and picked up the 13-4 today. I ended up paying $325 for it. It is blued and has a 4" barrel. I don't think that I will mind the fixed sights as I was just about ready to pick up a Ruger GP100 with fixed sights, but this Smith came along and was less money. Now, to find some nice wood grips for it.

I always say the fixed site M13 and M65 take an undue backseat to the 19/66. Very underated. I'd prefer a shrouded ejector rod but the fixed sites are very usable. Good deal on that one and a definite keeper!

You may find that the rubber grips, ugly as they are, are more functional and much more comfortable to shoot than wood grips, especially with 357 loads.
