Hey i just got me a new RIA 1911 govt .45 acp, whats the best JHP for the gun i had some FTF with ball ammo i have about 150 rounds thru it so far is it ok to use it for my main carry with 230 gr ball ammo till its broken in?

I use Corbon Pow'r Ball ammo in my Colt Defender because the stubby action of the 3" barrel caused some FTF problems with traditional JHP ammo. The polymer ball makes the HP behave like a round nose for loading purposes but also pushes the hollow point open.

I figure it has a 9mm velocity, a .40 S&W bullet weight, and a .45 ACP diameter. What's the down side?

Did you clean it before you shot it? RIA's don't (shouldn't) need break in periods

Yeah, they generally run pretty good out of the box but it never hurts to put some rounds through any auto just to be sure you can trust it. I will say that the mags that come with RIA's generally suck so you may want to pick up some quality mags You may find that after a good cleaning and lube and some good mags that it runs fine, that was my experience with my RIA GI .38 Super.

I've never had a Hydra Shok fail to feed in any pistol. If the threads on this and other forums are any indication, then Gold Dots seem to be problematic feeders in a variety of pistols.

Try different brands, shoot what works, don't worry about it.

I got an ACT-Mag in my RIA i heard they are the best, i also have a cheap mag it has some FTF , i think the ACT Mag would do better i will buy some more ammo and test it.

the slide doesnt stay opened after th elast round with the junk mag, with the ACT mag it stays open and feeds well i will try JHp after 200 rounds of ball ammo then i will be confident to move up to "flying ashtrays"

Proven mags in most 1911's: CMC power mag 8 rounders, Wilson 47D 8 rounders.

I've literally put thousands and thousands of stoppage free rounds through 3 different 1911's with CMC power mags.

Hollow points that feed well in most 1911's: Remington golden saber, Federal hydra-shok.

I've used Metalform and Wilson ETM mags in several 1911's and they've been 100%.

Most 1911 problems ultimately are magazine problems.

The ACT-Mag/Novak is probably the same as what came with your gun and seems to be the same design as the Mec-Gars.

I've a lot of the cheap 7 round "GI forgeries" from gun shows and Sportsmans Guide and after weeding out about 1 in 15 that were no good, they now give me no problems.

No issues either with the ACT/Novak/Mec-Gar, CMC or Metalform mags. Never tried a Wilson as I've never seen the need to pay more than $10-15 for a 1911 mag, and most of mine were less than half that.

It should feed EVERYTHING!!! They usually do, anyway.

For my 1911 made by the same company (Armscor) I use ONLY old USGI or Colt 7 round mags. I have NEVER had a feed problem with any of those mags in this gun.

You will really like the RIA - it is very accurate.
(Oh, yeah - make sure it is clean and lightly lubed on the contact spots, and see this site for a lot more 1911 info: http://forum.m1911.org/
the best 1911 site on the net.

My RIA Tac, had some minor feed issues out of the box. I tiny bit of fluff and buff on the extractor coupled with GENUINE COLT 7 rounders, and she feeds 100%. Thats with anything I have fed her so far, too. My Checkmate 7 rounders work well. It seems that the flat followers and that dang little dimple on top of them makes a world of difference. At least it did for mine.

Without a better description of the FTF its really hard to guess, but its not unheard of to have the extractor a bit too tight or a burr on it or the breech face that hinders the round sliding up under the extractor to feed -- had to take a small file to the breech face on one of my Kimbers. OTOH a weak mag spring or late release point will have about the same effect, so if it works with other mags its most likely not the gun.
