Submitted an article to Shotgun News and they bought it. Signed the contract today but they want one more photo to go along with the text (already sent them 9 photos) and I need to shoot that and get it off to the editor.

Assuming they actually print it (sometimes magazines buy stories and shelve them so the competition can't buy them) this is the 18th magazine article I will have had published but my first for a gun magazine. All the others were on art, art history and architecture.

Now if I can just get some publisher interested in one of the five book manuscripts I have written...

Hey, does this now make me a gun expert?

Out of curiousity, how much do mags pay for articles? I'm sure it varies, I just have no idea.

Re: "Hey, does this now make me a gun expert?"
3000 plus post here on THR might.

Not sure what it pays. Never asked. Had to file a W9 so maybe it is enough to pay taxes on it but I doubt that it's a lot.

Can't discuss content until after it's published. Under contract.

An oeuvre of 5 book manuscripts and 18 published magazine articles published is proof anyone can do it? :D

Seriously, though, congrats. Let us know details when you're able. I'll look for it.

Is the title "The Value of Loose Ammunition" or "Gunbroker Selling Secrets: Creating A Bidding Frenzy"?

/I still laugh thinking about your auction.

Saxon, please explain or direct me to an explanation of how in the heck that happened. I gotta know...:D

The listing was meant to be satire. Frustration with the munitions bubble was at an all time high. I believe I placed a bid on it when it was at around $5000. Once it got to be high enough people just started bidding massive amounts because we all knew nobody was going to pay for it.

In answer to how much is paid for an article.... Not much. I write motorcycle touring articles for American Rider magazine occasionally, and they pay just enough to make it a royal hassle when it comes to income tax time! As I recall, I ended up paying Uncle about what I made by writing.. which I wouldn't have had to pay had I NOT gotten paid for writing. Confusing, I know. Combined with my real job, it was kind of a disappointment. Neat to see your name in print nationally though... congrats, Saxon...

According to the 2006 Writers' Market, Shotgun News pays $200-$500 per assigned articles. It doesn't mention freelance articles, other than that 95% of the articles in Shotgun News are freelance written. Also, it publishes articles 3 months after accepted on average, and the writer gets a sample copy for free. Now this information is 4 years old, so it may not be completely accurate.

Saxon,
Congratulations on the contract. The best I've ever done is make the covershot for a doll magazine.
Good job! Been reading your threads for a good long time. I would've figured you'd have been published numerous times before now.

At any rate, CONGRATULATIONS !!

Anyone can NOT get an article published!!!
Congratulations on your accomplishment and +1 to letting us know when it comes out.
Are you or have you tried Shooting Times, Gun and Ammo etc?
