I went camping with a few friends. It was me and my wife, a buddy and his wife and another buddy and his boy of 12. We were in a very isolated spot in the mountains and I took a .22 rifle to plink around with. (A CZ 452, in case anyone was wondering.)
Well, the boy had never shot before, his mom is very anti-gun, but dad was fine with it and mom wasn't there to say no. Anyways, dad approved and I got the rifle out, spent an hour or so going over firearms safety and so forth and we went out to shoot. It took him a while to catch on, but I was patient and helped him with marksmanship fundamentals. We spent a whole afternoon shooting and by the time we were done he was shooting tighter groups than I was. Anyways, it was a great experience for him and it was the first time I've really had a chance to teach a kid to shoot. By the time we broke down camp he was begging his dad for a .22 of his own. I think he is going to try and talk mom into it.
It was a great camping trip, overall, but that was just the icing on the cake for me. Hopefully the boy will grow up to be a skilled marksman with a healthy respect for firearms.
Anyways, just wanted to share. If any of you folks have an opportunity to introduce someone to the sport, take it. It feels great.
