The Desert Eagle in 50ae (did he call it a Deagle???) is a fanboy gun. Heck, Carol O'Connor carried one briefly in the TV series "In the Heat of the Night." The "agents" carried them in "The Matrix." Heck, at one time, MR actually had the cheek to post a link on the product website of all the movies the DE was in. It told everyone just who the market was devoted to. There is a still a vestige of this in that MR sells airsoft versions of the DE (fanboys are notoriously broke and cannot actually afford a real one).
There must be something to the jamming, because on the FAQ there are several FAQ's devoted to firing technique (for instance, limp-wristing is listed as a cause for a failure to go into battery, and grip-hold is a cause for flinging spent cases at your head). Naturally it must have nothing to do with the pistol, but end user error, right?
However, in the Desert Eagle's defense (objectively, because I don't care for them), one problem with rebated rim designs is reliability. The ultimate reason the 40S&W extinquished the older 41ae is the reliability of the 41ae. Yeah, there were other reasons, but the 40's popularity showed there was enough interest in such a caliber weapon out there, but the ae just couldn't get anybody's interest like the 40 did several years later.
More so, there are users here who use the 41 and 44 magnum versions who report success with the DE. Frankly, I would rather have a revolver in one of those calibers, but I also don't care for Glocks. Many here would disagree with my own personal choices - it makes the world go round.
The DE, like the Glock and more and more the Five seveN, suffers some significant backlash because of fanboys. Fanboys make discussion of any firearm arduous because they tend to type in mono-syllabic words and think they are witty with useless contributions to discussions like "Glock - nuff said." or other comments. I'm surprised that "pwnd" and other terms don't show up with them. Perhaps not yet in any case. Fanboys may not have even fired a Glock or DE in their life, but weep with silent joy as Agent Smith draws his the first time. They jump up and cheer when Tommy Lee Jones makes his Glock speech.
As a result, the very legitimate reasons for owning a DE get lumped in with the lusts of the fanboy who knows so little (but does work on his forearm strength while at the computer). MR doesn't devote itself as much to fanboys (why turn on those who won't buy and turn off those who will?). But for folks like me, who remember the site when it focused on Hollywood and gold plating, I can't get past it enough to consider the DE.
My loss, perhaps. But I will give a nod to legitimate users who, despite the taint given by fanboys, use the DE and find them suitable for their needs. Those who are experts in the design here may perform the necessary task of apologetics regarding the design. I do my own when it comes to Tanfoglio and Western Field.
In the end, I don't hate the DE. I don't need it, but others see the use. I respect that. Sorry the fanboys keep getting in the way.
