I have long wanted a 300 H&H rifle. No reason. Maybe I just like the sound of saying 300 H&H.

I love the Ruger #1. When I saw that the #1 Medium Sporter is now available in 300 H&H I wanted one badly.

Then I saw an older #1 RSI (full stock) in 30-'06 for sale and though that it would be really cool to convert it to 300 H&H.

Well, it's a lot more entailed than I realized and the cost is prohibitive. So it will remain a 30 caliber while I sell some guns to finance the purchase of the 300 #1.

So, here's my newest 30-'06. But can't you just imagine this bad boy as a fire breathing 300 Magnum? That 20" barrel really would breathe fire.

.300H&H is hardly a firebreathing magnum. It's barely a step up from .30-06.
Do huh?...it is a near ballistic twin to the .300WM and due to case design does a bit better with the heavier bullets. Furthermore it is the small-bore magnum that all others are judged by, and the basis for most.

SaxonPig, I think it is a perfect match for a single shot rifle because it's magnum length is not a detriment to the action and I too share your love for the sleek, simple and strong falling block design. What is the problem with rechambering it in the .300H&H...I figured it would be a simple chamber reaming job considering the action is proved for the pressure and the caliber is the same. Is the bbl too small in diameter for the safe chambering of the cartridge?

:)

At least 400 FPS over the 06 with a 180 (2700 v. 3100). I think that's more than "barely a step up."

The 06 is maybe the greatest caliber ever designed. I have several rifles in 30-06. I want something different.

Smith said barrel had to come off and a new extractor modified and fitted. Estimate was $300. Someone else told me that he had the same job done on a #1 for $154 so I will ask another smith for a quote.

Bummer; I completely forgot about the extractor being effected by the larger case diameter, I can see that being an issue. OTOH, it looks like you have a nice '06 with a Mannlicher style stock, and that is never a bad thing.

Lucky for me my own falling block rechambering project (Browning 1885 in .45-70Govt.->.458Am.Ex., based upon the .45-120Sharps) uses the same case head.
