The reason your BFR was punishing is that it lacks a muzzle brake/compensator, which all of the Smith guns have installed by default.

FALSE data there bud... the ones made by Smith & Wesson for John Ross are UNPORTED and guy who have em love em for the most part.

My S&W 460 Mag in a 12" barrel is non ported and has between 3-4x LESS recoil that my 500 BFR...go figure.

I have shot a few rounds out of a friends 4 inch S&W 500 magnum and I can relate to this post. There is having fun with the exhileration of a powerful handgun like my 629 classic with full power 44 loads and then there is not having fun.

I didn't enjoy shooting the 500.

see a doctor

I'm not being a smart aleck here. If you still have pain, you should see a doctor. Once again, not being a smart aleck here, do you bruise easily - blood condition of some sort, or have any other hand conditions?

IF the doctor ok's your next range session, I would seriously consider some custom grips like S&W's X frome overgrip.

It can be age (a factor)….as well as, it can be medication (if you’re on medication) that one is on. Some medications (doctor prescribed, even, over the counter) contribute to bruising when their is trauma.
When a firearm causes that kind of trauma to your hand……as your post stated. It’s beyond said gun/cartridge in question.
As others have posted….see a doctor.
