I was just finishing up casting tonight. With my lee bottom pour pot nearly empty, I unplugged it and my fan and started putting the fan away. Unfortunately, the cord for the fan was wrapped around the cord for the pot so the remaining lead splashed down the front of my apron and all over my lawn.

The good news is I was wearing a leather apron and didn't get so much as a blister. The other good news is that there were only around 2-3lbs left in the pot.

The bad news is that it had just rained heavily. That tinsel effect seems to work the same when lead lands ON the water. It blew it over about a 4 square foot area. I cleaned up what I could before I ran out of daylight.

Now I am just trying to decide if I need to dig the sod out in that area or just get the stuff I can see. Thoughts?

Take it from me. Wear at least heavy clothing when casting. I feel pretty lucky and burn free at the moment.

Thank Goodness you had protective gear on! Hope you had eye protection also!.

It's only lead, gather up what you can.

 Glad your ok.
I would say clean up as best you can and if the grass does not die and nothing is eating it (other than bugs) your probably ok.
(but don't know from a legal standpoint, lots of crazy laws out there that must be followed)

Hope you had eye protection also!

I never go without it. Gloves don't get a pass either. I started working in my Dad's machine shop when I was 8. I still can't wear jewelry of any kind after all of the machinery horror stories and I have not worked around heavy machinery in over 20 years.

As far as cleaning goes. I think 20 minutes of digging out some sod and the expense of a couple of pieces of new sod are probably worth the peace of mind of not having to worry about it.

Yikes !

Thats a close call, im glad you are OK.

If you're worried about lead contamination, remove the grass, rocks, sticks, etc from the area that were splashed on. If the soil was wet, even the heaviest of lead flows wouldn't get beyond the surface. I'd just scoop up whats there and call it good. A real close trim of the grass in that area would probably expose everything you needed to pick up. Tedious !

If you have children, or pets... well, you could always pull the sod, its not difficult to redo an area that small. Personal call, for sure.

Got up early A.M. and the grass is gone. It wasn't very much and now my OCD can move on.

thanks for the responses guys!

Spilled lead on your sod is as much of a danger as dropping a wheel weight in our lawn...seriously.

Rake it up, wash it, throw it back in the pot.

Glad your ok!

well, it's actually okay to melt it starting from a cold pot- the water will evaporate as it heats up but before the lead melts

he'd never want to add it to a pot of lead that was already molten

Glad you're ok!

I'd just clean up what I could.
Heck it was dug up in the beginning.

As far as remelting, I'd let it dry off.
There's no reason to try melting wet lead.
While not likely, there's always the possibility of some of it falling into the liquid lead.

Just take it inside, or put it in the garage, or shed, even in the trunk of the car.
Just get it dry first.

my 2¢ worth, YMMV
