I am also in the camp of not letting it run all the way out before adding more lead.
Mine rarely gets less than 2/3 of the way full. When I use up 1/3 of the lead, I add some ingots. They melt a heck of a lot faster when they're submerged in the melt than if you're adding to an empty pot. I'd say 2-3 minutes instead of 20.
I've been ladling for the past couple years and just got my first bottom pour pot, so I'm anxious to see if my routines change much. I dunno, haven't fired it up yet.
