Are there any gun laws I need to be aware of?

High capacity magazine bans. etc?

watch carrying downtown because the RNC there will be a mile or so of no gun zones and as a ccw holder you must make yourself aware of these.

notify the police if you are pulled over and watch for no gun signs on stores. does your state carry over to ohio?

Yes. Ohio honors all other states.

Nothing special Flechette that hasn't already been mentioned. Ohio isn't really much different than FL on gun laws but Cleveland is pretty anti-gun run city and although Ohio has preemption, Cleveland is always trying to implement some stupid new law that gets struck down. Wouldn't surprise me if they tried to pass something dumb right before the RNC.

Welcome to Cleveland, enjoy your stay. I hope you have accommodations as with the RNC starting (people already arriving) there is literally not a room to be had for miles. Security will be extremely tight with the RNC in town and there will be secure zones setup downtown. I have no intention of being anywhere near the downtown areas for the next few weeks till the RNC is well over. :)

Everything as to gun laws has been well covered.

Ron

I could be wrong, but I don't think local municipalities can supersede state laws.

correct.

Cleveland tried pulling some crap years back saying cops carry 9mm so everyone carries 9mm or 38 no higher and no high capacity mags. ohio says if you certify with it than you can carry it.

going back to my criminal justice college days a professor who is an attorney said city cant override or conflict with state law and state cant conflict with federal.

I work in Cleveland. I've been pulled over twice over the years and have had good experiences, if you can call getting a ticket "good".

Roll the window down prior to the officer getting there, turn on the dome light if it's dark outside, keep your hands on the wheel in plain sight unless/until directed otherwise. Don't rummage around getting license and registration while the cop is walking to the vehicle. He/she has no idea what you're looking for. I cannot guarantee you won't get the oddball cop, but my limited experience has been that politeness extended results in politeness in return.

You MUST inform the officer if you are carrying. Failure to do so is a felony.

Oh, they can't but you should be aware of what Cleveland is trying to pass. It just might cost you a lawyer to fight the illegal law. That was my point.

Just curious, but if my weapon is in the center console of my vehicle, is that considered "carrying"?

It does depend on what state you are in. In Florida, for example, no carry permit is needed as long as the firearm (loaded or unloaded) is "securely encased" in a closed console, glove compartment, any box (shoe, hat, etc.,) with a lid, gun case, whether or not locked, zippered gun case or a snapped holster.

See www.handgunlaw.us for the vehicle carry laws in all states and territories.

There are no gun laws in Ohio below the state level.

That means:
  • No AWBs
  • No magazines limits (since repeal of the thirty round limit)
  • No handgun bans
  • No local bans on lawful concealed carry

And Georgia is a Crap hole of a state.

Georgia is a lot less restrictive than Ohio...and the signs do not carry the weight of law, in Georgia.

Georgia does not require you to inform nor do you have to have a permit to carry a loaded gun in the vehicle.

So, yeah, as long as you are not talking about gun restrictions...Georgia is a crap hole.
