I recently came across a forum, "FINALLY FOUND IT! " and was disturbed at the tragedy this guy is faced. So my important is:
"What if by chance a person was refinishing a firearm and some of the serial number is unreadable on, say a shotgun, but this person has the paperwork saying that it's his and the paperwork matches the numbers that are visible/readable?"

I don't see where it's a problem. The only crime would be where there was some deliberate attempt to eradicate all the serial numbers. If some are legible, the others can readily be brought out by etching with acid. And, having the paperwork oughta take care of any official person's questions.

Thanks.....the person is actually me and I camo painted my shotgun. I don't have a criminal record and would rather not have one as I am in the military. Just wanted to make sure. Thanks again!

You haven't permanently removed the serial number. If I were you I'd just redo the paint job and either mask the serial number or ensure the paint is thin enough it doesn't obscrure it. After all it's only paint.
