I'd take the answer from anyone, but I thought one of them might know the answer. I'm looking at getting an 1858 soon, and wondered just how much velocity loss I can expect between the 5.5" and more commonly seen 8" barrel lengths, assuming all other factors are the same.

I'd like to get both. :)

It doesn't really matter much, but I wanted to make sure it wasn't going to be a larger difference than what I could expect from a revolver firing smokeless.

I never have, nor will I ever own a Ruger Old Army. I've been shooting CAS since 1992. I now have 14-17 C&Bs (lost count, love 'em all, many others I didn't keep). If I knew then what I know now I would get a pair of SS Uberti short barreled Remington NMAs for serious matches.

Well I have both a 8" & a 5.5" barreled Pietta 1858 NMA's & love em both.

This is the average chronographed ballistics I've gotten from them.

Bullet = .457 143 grain Cast Round Ball.
Powder = Goex FFFg black powder.
Primer = Remington #11.
5-1/2” Barrel Average Ballistics.
30gr. Volume = 756 fps. 181 ft. Lbs.

I have the data around here somewhere, but haven't had time to look it up. Voodoochile's data looks good to me.

I am continually amazed: out of the blue, in a thread about Remington NMA's, we get a "I've never owned an ROA and never will." Where did that come from?

I`ve got a matching pair of Pietta 8 inch barrel Remingtons ...and a pair of Uberti 5 1/2 in barrel Remingtons ......I bought the Uberti`s because of the driftable front sight ...and favor them ...

Factory

The sights were on it from the factory. As to the rose, Well I bought it for me. The wife always has told me that in our family that the one who shoots
it best it's theirs. So we had a shooting match and I lost. SHE wanted the
rose on it. It's hers, but I get to use it once in a while like a lot of thing around here. I guess I ought to feel lucky for that!!

Yes It Is

Yes, I belive it is the same frame. Actualy the cyclinder in the gun is a .44
It has been plugged and drilled out to a .36 (.357) And yes I have had those
little screws come loose also. I had to lock-tite them in. I took a file and
opened up the rear sight so as to see more light on either side of the front
sight. This gun has a interal trigger adjustment. The barrel you see, is a
9mm modern pistol barrel.

Madcratebuilder - I too had those little screws come loose. Lost the blade in the cleanup sink. Fortunatly I have replacements. A senior member awhile back suggested to use clear finger nail polish on them, as a loctite. Works real well. I centered the sights, and sealed them. Just change your POA if the wind is blowing. If I had to do over again, I would not have paid the extra money for the target sights. It's not authentic anyway.

I would not have paid the extra money for the target sights

I agree, not worth the extra money. Cabela's did have it on sale for the fixed sight price, but I would go fixed if I had it to do over.
I bet that is a real sweet revolver to shoot, the full frame weight and a .36. I assume your using around 16-18 gr with a .376rb?
Thanks for sharing.

True 36

Boy you are right on powder. We shoot 17 grs Goex FFF CCI no. 11 caps,
The ball is a .360. The chamber dia. is .357. The barrel is a 9mm. I do have
a Rapine double cavity .360, but I have been using the Hornady .360 this
last summer. Oh we use enought "Creame of Wheat" over the powder to get
the ball about 1/16 inch from the end of cyclinder. Then we put a small amount of lube over the ball . Hope all of this helps. As I get older, I'm 65
and the wife has a bad rotor cup, We had to go to shootings with little to no
recoil. All of our target pistols are .32 and the revolver is the biggest caliber
we shoot .36.

Talk is Cheap

I know people can talk a good game, But How does it shoot you might ask?
Well here is a 50 yd target the wife shot 10 shots one hand hold un-supported with the little .36 revolver. I'm sure by shooting from a rest the
gun will keep all shots well inside the 3 inch dia. "10" ring. I know the guy that
does this work will garrentee dime size groups at 50 yds from a ransom rest.
Well, thats what he said. Well here it is. If the wife knew I did this, she would
shoot me . So Shhhhhhhhh

Madcratebuilder - Sorry it is not a .36. It's a .44 I load 28 gr Goex with a wonder wad and a .451 ball. I have made a few "three leaf clovers" on my targets at 25 Yd. with that combo. Have never gone for 50 Yd yet.
