Having handled many Patton sabers, I am of the opinion that the edges were not sharpened. Patton designed this sword as a thrusting sword only, he never meant for anyone to parry or cut with it. The balance is poor for parrying. His defense was a thrusting attack, and you see it in manuals of the period. The point was sharp, and it was a chisel point. This chisel point will catch on fabric and pierce whatever it is in front.
