I just got my new VZ58 home, here's a few pics.

I took these pics a few minutes ago.

First, the gun:

Here's the markings on the receiver. Very sparse, which I like.

To strip, you first have to pull the trigger and release the striker. Then you push the take down pin across.

Then you can remove the top cover with the two springs (recoil spring and striker spring).
fs_2.jpg

From there you draw the bolt carrier to the rear and remove the carrier and bolt by pulling it up and out of the receiver.
fs_3.jpg

You cake the locking piece out of the bolt by simply lifting it off of the bolt.
fs_4.jpg

You then remove the gas piston cover (not tube like a AK or SKS) by pushing the pin across.
fs_5.jpg

Then you lift the cover off exposing the gas piston.

From there you push the gas piston slightly to the rear and lift it out of the rifle along with its spring.

It's very simple to strip the rifle without tools. All of the part fit perfectly and the pins offer just the right amount of resistance.

So far I'm happy with the rifle. It appears to be very well made. I'm looking forward to shooting it, hopefully this weekend.

Nice rifle, congrats!

Certainly something different than your average AK, should draw some attention at the range;)

Can I ask where you got it and how much it set you back?

It's a lot different than your average AK! Aside from its appearance, it's nothing like an AK. :D But it does look a lot like one.

I bought it in Indiana from a company named Blythes Sports. I paid $850 for it which is retail. They weren't dealing as it was their only one and they knew they could sell it. :) I didn't bicker much either, like I usually do because I just wanted it.

There's a field-stripping video on Youtube I've watched, and these look like they're genuinely simple and easy to disassemble, not simple but fiddly.

I want one, and chances are good I'll be building one by fall. I don't like the idea of compliance parts in the mags, so an ORF kit sounds best to me.

Yeah, ORF makes nice stuff. I wanted to go the CZ route just to have a CZ rifle... I know it's mostly meaningless but still, I'm goofy like that.

You'd be better off getting a woodworker on your forum to make you some wood furniture.

You can also contact hotbarrel on Gunco for a US made gas piston ($22 shipped) and these fine fellows will be happy to sell you a US made pistol grip.

I'm not sure ORF is going into the Vz58 business, did you mean "Ohio Ordnance Works"? If you did, they use magazine parts for compliance, too.

I plan on ordering a side folding stock for it, I hear the drop right on with only a couple of minutes of tinkering. I also want a rail for it so I can mount a red dot on it. I found this setup:

...but I don't like the whole handguard being replaced. I want one that just replaces the gas system cover, like the one in this YouTube video:

Does anyone have any idea where to get this rail from?

Sturmgewehr, I'm shocked at the sticker price on all that foolishness, too. I stocked up on cheap Vz58 kits last year and I was thinking of going here and getting some 1919 rails and attaching them to one set of my spare upper and lower handguards.

It should be easily achievable, since the gas piston doesn't come close to the gas piston cover during its movement.

For optics that stay put you can add a side rail just like an AK.

For walnut wood furniture ya can buy it already made $100

http://www.prexis.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=P&Category_Code=VZ58

and really great quality. a Smith can tune the FCG for take up, over travel and take it down to around 2.5 lbs without any ill effects pretty easily

if you remove your butt plate you will find a single slot headed screw, for the side folder it simply uses a shorter screw.

aimsurplus and centerfiresystems has 'em listed. They're about $800, so it seems like you got a good price.

I was thinking about building one, but for a milled and actually czech receiver, I'm thinking of getting the same (if i can sell my dpms AR).

I'm also planning on getting one each of the stock types.

Exactly how different are the mags? (They have 4 packs at centerfire pretty cheap, iirc.)

Cool, off the beaten path, sharp looking rifle.
