Circumstances dictate that I carry in a deep cover, SmartCarry, and I've been searching for the best personal defense handgun for my particular situation.

I've bought and sold a Glock 26 and a Smith 642 (now in the nightstand), researched compact semi-auto after compact semi-auto from the Hawgs to the Kimbers to the STI Rouge at $1,000+. Tonight I sized up the Wilson Combat ADP only to find its reliability and quality is doubtful.

And while I've been doing all this reading, calling, and talking, the model 36 rests quietly and confidently inside its holster, ready at a moment's notice to do its intended job simply and without question.

This very well may be the perfect self defense gun for my deep carry needs.

I completely agree. After years of various options, maximum trade off in concealment, reliability and power was the 2" standard J-frame 36/60. I went with the stainless 60 because I found a sweet "no dash" one ANIB. But 36 or 60, 2" and round butt with boot or combat grips, I don't care, it's the only J-frame I want to own or carry. I mean, others are fine, but this is the one I would choose first. Love the classic looks, and the way all-steel constructions dampens the recoil and lets me shoot faster and straighter. An all-time classic of handgun design.

I'm done.

Went to a gun show yesterday, and found nothing at any price that would do the job better'n this old M36.

I swapped the silver/black grips for checkered rosewood, and I think my carry gun search is over and done with.

purty, huh?

I think that any J-Frame Smith is a good choice. I just bought my third! If I was in real trouble, I'd rather have a Model 10...but if all I had was a J-Frame, I wouldn't feel too sorry for myself!

Doc450, that is one of the purtiest M 36s I ever did see. Very nice. Talk about a pocket rocket.

I just picked up my 2nd J frame 2 weeks ago, a 1964 m36. I got it out to the range for a second time...sooooo sweet. I think my 638 may be getting REAL dusty and lonley sitting in the gun safe so much!

J-Frame Smith & Wesson

I've been carrying a gun for almost 40 years, and my favorite has always been the Jframe Smith. I carried a 3-inch Model 36 for about 10 years, and last year switched to a Model 637. Only 18 ounces fully loaded, and very easy to conceal. I put a pair of Crimson Trace laser grips on it about 6 months ago. These 65-year-old eyes just ain't what they used to be, but the CT grips make it easy as pie to put the rounds where I want 'em.
Last fall when I first put the grips on the gun, I tried it out in my back yard (I've got a 40-yard range with backstop out behind the house). Shooting from the hip at 7 yards, I shot a 5 inch group, double action, about 3 inches above point of aim. Not bad for an old guy like me.

I also have 2 j frames. A mdl 49 purchased in 1982 and a Mdl 642 purchased in 2005 or 6. I love them both but have always wanted a 36 and will have one someday.

i've been lusting for a nice 36...your's is especially nice...since i live in california, it is especially hard to obtain a nice old pre lock
S&W...

i like how it is right now, but your gun would look killer with some nice faux ivory stocks and a tyler t-grip....

by the way, that bluing is excellent....damn near mirror finish...they don't make em like that anymore...
