I was just thinking about how far should I be able to shoot It is a savage mod 110 wood stock, bolt action and Tasco 3x9 on top. I used Remington core-lokt 130 gr for my ammo. I shot at 100 yd to get it on target. I shot a 1/2 in at a 100 yds. The but pad is very hard and is no help at all. I shot 40 rds and my shoulder began to swell and I had to quit shooting. I had put over 200 rds thru my 8mm and 30-30 and had no prob.
Any help would be good Thank you
John

1/2" or 1/2' groups?

The only reason I'm asking is that if you are asking about the range of a .270, I would assume that it is more like 1/2'.

I'm not trying to be rude, but a lot of people on internet gun forums always brag about being sub-MOA accurate, but ask some suspect questions for shooters that would have obviously have had to been in the game a while.

I'm not implying that you are the type, though.

Well, to answer your question, I would say that you could shoot it for about 2 miles, or so.

Regards,

Stinger

Nice! And it sounds like a shooter too! I love my .270. But I have to say, I don't like shooting it a ton either because of the recoil (guess I'm getting too used to my SKS's). 50 rds out of my .270 at the bench just isn't a fun afternoon for me, not like shooting my 1911 or other rifles. A good PAST (sp?) pad does wonders though. I like these shoulder pads because you can use them for all your guns.

Never shot a .270

I may not know what all of what y'all are saying ie sub-moa and alot of the others letters I have seen. I have shot my wheel guns alot and a few rifles but I had never delt with a .270 befor and at Reds I shot 3 rds groups and most of them were in a 1/2 inch groups after I got my scope to were it needed to be. I am not a great shooter, but I can shoot. All I wanted to know was what is the max eff ran. of the rifle and ammo I just got. And what could I do about the recoil. I shot 2 boxes of ammo.
Thanks for any and all help
Thanks for any comments

357 Texas :

I had an older Savage 110 in .30-06 - it was the 2nd most accurate rifle I have ever owned. Savage made an inexpensive rifle that would outshoot many more expensive ones. ( They still do.)
As to how far you can shoot it, the .270 was developed as a longer range, flatter shooting alternative to the .30 caliber big game cartridges. The effective range of a .270 probably IS around 2 miles, if you can see anything that far away. Pretty much whatever you can see, and can hit, from groundhogs to bears.

You can get a cheap slip on recoil pad at Walmart, and lighter weight bullets that may help you with the recoil. The 130 grain is a little heavy. The Remington is good quality ammo, and your rifle seems to like it, so I'd stick with that brand.

Just try the recoil pad, and keep shooting it and learning the rifle.

Good luck. Enjoy it.

Mark :)

This is for Stinger

If you would read the post again you would see that 357 did specify 1/2 in at 100 yards

I'm not sure if you are implying that a 270 will only shoot 6" (1/2') at 100 yards
or don't know the difference between the linear notation for inch " and feet '?

Or do you mean 1/2' (Half minute) in Angular notation

I had a Savage 710 K basicly a 110 I think the only difference the 710 had no iron sights, scope only. it was a 270 that was a real shooter. It was made in
the late '70

As far as range, if you are talking target shooting the 270 with the right loads should have no problems 1000 to 1500 yds.

For hunting with 130 gr at about 2900 fps I would not shoot over 500 yds. This is about the range falls below 1000 ftlbs of energy.

140 gr at 2900 fps 600 yds

150 gr at 2800 fps 600 yds

I got this info from the Hornady ballistic charts. This is just a reference

As far as the 1000 ft lbs of energy, this was in an article I read about minium requirements for a deer hunting cartridge. I don't remember why they picked 1000 ft lbs.

Jack O'Connor was a big fan of the 270. He used to write for Outdoor Life

As far as shooting 2 miles. There is no reason to try and shoot that far. If you could hit something that far you would just wound it.

We need to shoot responsibly. Gun accidents is what the anti-gunners thrive on.

45/70 GOVT.

I understand that the .270 can be an extremely accurate cartridge and I also understand the difference between an inch and a foot. If you would read my previous post, then you would understand why I questioned the aforementioned 1/2" group.

I was merely pointing out that it would be unique for someone to ask such a question and still be able to shoot like that. I'm not saying that it is impossible, particularly since this is an internet forum, and the average group size on the internet is about the size of a flies rump .

Stinger-

A .270 is a hunting rifle, not a heavy match rifle. If you'll limit yourself to sighting-in and occasional familiarity shooting and actual field use, your shoulder will appreciate it, and your barrel will last much longer...

If you like to fire a lot of rifle ammo at one session, a .223 might be a better choice.

You are right, most of the time when some one shoots they know all of the info that you know BUT not all of us are perfect. I am very very sorry that I may be able to shoot (not great but goon enough) to hit what I want to at 500 yrds. The group may be as small as a flies rump but I will hit it. With that said I am not all that book smart but street smart is another thing. I have been shooting for darn near 30 years. Most of that time was with my revo or an M16 or a M24. Do I know the stats on thoses wepons no I do not, BUT I will hit what I wanted to at 300 meters and not even have to think about it.

Now can someone help me out with some of the leters I have seen on the site, Please. So I can be as smart and perfect as someone else on this site.
Thank you for any and all help.

As far as some of the 270 maximum target shooting ranges that have been discussed, reaching out past 1000 yards with consistency would be very, very difficult.
