My Dad just gave me a Remington Model 41 Target Master, serial number 102###. It was the first gun I ever shot back when I was 6 years old. I'm 51 now. My Grand Dad bought it new, and when he died a few years back it went to my Dad.

The gun is probably 75%. The bluing is wore off, and it has very light rust that some steel wool and #9 will take care of. The stock finish is in bad shape, but the wood is in very good shape. Also has the original butt plate. I fired a sub sonic thru it, and it shot well. The action could be a little tighter, but I guess it's safe.

I have no intentions of ever selling it, and I'm wanting to refinish it. I'll just do a cold blue on it, and refinish the stock.

Would you guys leave it original, or refinish it?

I've got one of these I found at a local pawn shop in 1980. My father had a model 511 ScoreMaster model which had a seven round magazine. I couldn't get him to sell me the one he had so I spent a lot of time looking around for one. I was delighted when I found the TargetMaster. I think I paid like $35 for it.

Serial number is 59xxx. They must have made a pile of these.

It's an outstanding rifle. Very accurate. Mine has a perfect bore, couple of dings on the stock, probably 80 to 90 percent of the original bluing. It's put a lot of squirrels in the skillet.

Here's a link to some history.

I don't personally feel that getting an heirloom fixed up detracts from its sentimental value, short of it being an historical artifact.

Also, the guy who posted before me misspelled "potato," and he's from IDAHO! :neener:
