I've had my granddad's SKS for a few years now, and it has always been in a synth Montecarlo stock... I asked my dad about this, and he said that was the only way he had ever seen it... So, I'm at the shop today, and Dad had laid out 4 wood stocks that I had never seen before... Lo and behold, 1 of them is MY SKS's original stock!!! (minus the handguard :( ) plus 1 other SKS wood stock, and what I thought was an M96 stock, but it is some other Mauser. Its about 9" too short...

So... I am gonna put the original wood back on here for a while and see how I like it... I also found the original cleaning kit! :) Its been a good day!

I think I will take the other wood stock and sand it down and either refinish a darker color, or try and camo it or something fun... I know they dont sell for much, or do they?

I had to make an effort to keep my toes out of the pics... ;)

Already swapped it over, and my dumb-butt put the wrong wood stock on it! HAHAHAHAA!!!

Many SKS wood stocks will be missing the upper hand guard because it's a PITA to get it off w/o breaking the wood. You have to tapout (not sure of the term but it's the cylinder part that keeps the upper in place. Many get so frustrated they just break it apart. I like the look of the Tapco after market assault style stock but my Norinco was bought NIB in '92 and I just decided to keep it stock w/no mods. If AK's ever dry up it will increase the value of SKS's also. It would be interesting to see what SKS's are selling for in 20 years but I probably will be dead. Bummer!

I might order a 'cheese grater' guard for it when the wood is on. I like the look of that, or just find another wooden one.

I'm sort of excited about refinishing the extra wood stock to see what I can do with it.

The upper wood, with the gas system in place, is available from SARCO. It's also not very expensive.

There's even a tool available to remove the cross-bolt in the stock.

One of the things in life that makes me remember my grandfather the most, is the smell of gun oil or that particular smell a gun barrel has to it... That's what their house typically smelled like unless someone was cooking something. :) Papaw was the type would would buy stuff just to take it apart, clean and refinish if necessary, and put it in the closet. When he passed away in 2001, Dad found 3 - 1873 Winchesters, in 32-20, 38-40 and 44-40... then when the 'crazy aunt' left town, the 44-40 disappeared, and my dad sold the remaining 2 to the local Harley Davidson dealer (who is also a gun collector)...

The top gun is a 1910 Gustaf's Swedish Mauser (bore condtion1), the SKS, and the revolver was his EDC... basically his pocket gun (he was 6'4" and had large pockets :) ). S&W Model 10 38spl. those grips are the originals, I also have the very much larger grips that he kept on it as well...

You could try to paint the handguard a honey color...... might match suprisingly well. (At least until you find / get the wood)

Is your SKS commercial or military grade? congrats on finding the original wood!

^^^ Thanks mike!

^^ no, no painting the black, as I may be selling the entire MC setup soon. I have already found a matching wooded one from another forum, just waiting for my Paypal funds to update.

^ its commercial, imported by Norinco and was likely produced in the early 80's. bayo lug was machined off already... But it is an ALL number matching gun now! :D
