I know they're not the same but what do we NEED?

I have a number of firearms. All I really need is:

A Target .22 with a threaded barrel, for my can
2" snubby .38
6-8" .357 or .44
9mm Rohrbaugh, smallest, lightest 9mm semi auto EVER made
12 Gauge pump
10/22 with threaded :):):)
AK. or AR

All I really need is:
Glock 17L for carry
6” GP-100 357 if I need to kill something big
5” Range Officer 9mm for precision work
Rem 870 for many reasons
Marlin 60 .22 for small game
AR for a little more reach.

That’s not to say the rest do t have a purpose, but that is probably the minimum I’d be happy with.

Semiautomatic 12 ga with 18"barrel and interchangeable choke tubes and a Walther p22 or similar handgun. Everything else is just icing on the cake.

All I really need is:
More guns.

P.S. More Dunhill pipes.

P.P.S. New straw fedora.

P.P.P.S. Leather & tweed brogue oxfords.

Close...gray 3 button suit with cream or white pinstripes, matching fedora, glossy black leather shoes, a 1927a1, a victory model 38 revolver, and Remington model 11 chopped down to a whippit. Add to that a membership to SASS and a larger following of folks looking at “Zoot Shoot” games. AND a nice pipe, I could also say a 2 finger glass of rye, but that falls more into the “want” category so I will stick with the “needs”

Need? Satisfaction in life, and a dream to chase. A spouse to go through this crazy backwards place with, and just enough toys to keep him from being bitter. Motorcycles and boats help a lot, but that ain’t for this site.

I have always said that a man could live a very full life with a marlin 336 and a set of reloading gear. Light loads for pot meat, standard loads for deer or 2 legged critters should that need arise, and heavy 200 gr loads for toothy critters or antlered horse sized critters. Light enough, fast enough, accurate enough, versatile as can be. I should own another one.

That is definitely a need.... to fill the silver flask in the inside breast pocket of that pinstriped suit. Strictly for emergency use of course, when you're out and about.

It’s such a hard question to answer. Need for what?

I NEED food, water, shelter, clothing. Anything that aides in me attaining those are not necessarily needs, but tools.

I think my answer changes sometimes...but normally I’d say I need a 9mm for carry and an AR for general purposes. Lately I’d be more inclined to go with with a nice bolt gun in 300 WM for a rifle.

And a 22 for 22 stuff - I eat small game whenever I can.

This is a question reminds me of one I hate hearing from liberals: "Why would anyone need more than one gun?" It's like saying, "Why would you need more than one book?" When you hear someone ask why anyone needs more than one gun, you realize you're dealing with prejudice rooted in total ignorance.

I'm also disappointed when I hear someone say they got one gun--a pistol--to protect their home. For carry, sure. But to chase burglars, when you could have a 30-round rifle? No way!

But I digress, since the OP asked something different. The question is interesting to me, because I have been trying to figure out exactly what I need to have in order to do all the things I might reasonably expect to do.

I used to buy what I wanted, not what I needed, so I ended up with items that weren't all that practical. Examples: two Smith & Wesson revolvers, a Colt .38 Super in bright stainless, and a Romak III (PSL). These days I occasionally think about utility.

I bought a .17 HMR because I thought it was a great cheap way to learn how to use a scoped rifle accurately. That worked out really well. It also turned out to be a great squirrel gun, although it's not right for my area. I had a Sweet Sixteen which worked much better.

I wanted to be able to kill squirrels and possums quietly, so I got an air rifle.

I wanted to shoot coyotes without much recoil, so I got a .204 Ruger. I wanted to be able to shoot them (and other varmints) at night, so I got the best night scope I was willing to spring for. I read the hunting regulations and found out I had to use a .22 if I wanted to shoot coons at night, and my existing .22 was not good with a scope, so I got a second .22.

When I shot squirrels, I found that they sometimes hit the ground wounded, and I didn't want to blow their heads off with shotgun shells, so I bought a .22 pistol. I actually needed that. You can stomp on them, but it's a little gross, and they may scamper around and make it difficult, so I like the pistol.

I want to be able to shoot hogs and deer, and people say the .204 is not really a hog gun, so I'm thinking I would like to try 6.5 Swedish, which supposedly works on just about any large game in the US. I have an LR-308, but it seems a overpowered for pigs, and it's heavy. I believe it would be illegal here for deer because of the magazine size, but maybe there's a way around that. Anyway, a little bolt gun with less recoil sounds better.

Then there are my self-defense guns. I wonder if Joy Behar would understand if I told her I needed a semiauto rifle even though I already had my granddad's aluminum .22 revolver. And what if I told her a compact Glock needs to be supplemented with a full-size one for times when I have more room to conceal it? What if I told her I need a 9mm compact because the 10mm is hard on my dress pants?

These days I'm trying to identify niches and fill them. I guess later on I'll go back to buying whatever looks like fun.

It is all up to individual. Some may see no use for a 22LR, some a 12ga.

It is more about what do you want?

I have more guns than I need, but less than I want.

I need a bigger gun safe.

"To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentation of the women." - Conan, lol.

As for me, a good rifle, and a handgun to fight my way back to it if I drop it.

And if you “need” something, that means you need two in case you lose one for whatever reason.

So, I need two G19s, two ARs, two medium/large game rifles, and two 22 rifles.

Went from 4 to 8 necessary guns pretty quickly.
Gotta have a backup plan too, what happens if your scenario changes. That’s 4 more with a secondary set of backup tools.

Ok. What I perceive I truly need:
A reliable and fairly accurate .22 rifle.
A 12 gauge pump for bird hunting with a fully rifled barrel for big game.
A reliable and accurate personal defense pistol like a 1911.
Yes, that’s all I need.

What I REALLY need is Freedom to choose and own what I truly WANT.

Makes sense, but not just a backup. Probably need the next size larger AND smaller for each set of guns.

“Super owners” are really just having what they need:)

“Need”?

In the strictest sense, from a firearm standpoint, nothing.

I don’t hunt for food, my career doesn’t demand that I be armed, I often go weeks at a time without touching a gun.

As far as being comfortable, one pistol and one pump shotgun would likely cover any theoretical “needs”.

My home, vehicle, and person could likely be covered with only those two.

My wife must never know I have broadcast this idea to the ages...

As luck would have it, I have been able to cross over into “want” enough to be beyond sated.

Other “that would be cool to have” items rear their lovely heads as time marches on.

It’s always nice to have something to wish for.

Being able to respond in a bad situation should at the very least be considered Prudent.
Is that a need or a want?

Need driven by Prudence:
A firearm to defend my home and family (CF handgun, and/or shotgun)
A firearm I can successfully hunt with should the need arise (RF, CF rifle, and/or shotgun)

Want driven by Economy:
A firearm that is affordable and easy to shoot for practice during an ammo shortage (RF, black powder, and/or air gun)

Want driven by possible future expectations:
A firearm that is good for training other family members (RF and/or air gun)
A firearm suitable to defend against violent civil unrest (CF, and/or shotgun)

What isn't needed is a collection, which IMHO falls under, well, a Hobby.
If you don't train with your firearms, you likely don't need them.
Nice to have, but unnecessary for the mission unless you're investing for financial gain..

38 special stubby,,,, Ohhh, I already have that, so guess I don’t ‘need’ anything,,,,,Hmmmm, maybe some more Jack..

Pretty close. Jeff Cooper advised having TWO each of your guns. If one breaks, or is used in a shooting, you will wait at LEAST 12 months to get it back. Can't afford this with al mine but I do with all me defensive/house/car guns.

What I would need, to cover most situations where a firearm might be used are: pistol and bolt action rifle in .22 cal., 12 gauge pump shotgun, 30 cal. bolt action rifle, 9mm pistol, and an AR15.
