After almost a year of owning it, I finally got around to shooting my Howdah today. In the process, I learned a few things.

Pyrodex sucks. I bought some when I first started shooting BP, and I've been trying to get rid of it. My revolvers eat it up just fine with no issues, but I didn't even consider what I was doing when I packed my stuff for the range this morning. Loaded up my first barrel, capped it, cocked the hammer, and POP! Just the cap, no boom. Went through about 5 caps, still nothing.

Have the right tools. I didn't have a nipple pick, but I did have a stiff piece of fishing line, so I picked out the charge through the nipple, filled the nipple up with FFg grade Pyrodex, and capped it again. POP...BOOM! After a noticable delay, I was able to get it to go off. I ended up having to charge the nipple every time I shot the gun. Stupid Pyrodex.

Be patient. When I got to the range, all the 7 yard spots were taken, so I grabbed one of the 15 yard spots. This made it kind of tricky to figure out where some of the balls where going, so I had a hard time keeping track of the accuracy, sight picture and effectiveness of different powder loads, ball sizes and patch thicknesses.

Roll your own if needed. The Howdah has a built in ramrod on a swivel under the barrel. It doesn't detach from the gun, just pivots around. I had originally taken it off because I don't like how it looks, but I put it back on today for lack of a better ramrod. It sucked. It was hard to get it positioned right, and it was hard to get enough leverage on it to ram a tightly patched ball. Next time, I'm making a range rod with a nice big handle on the end so I can get some better leverage.

Waste stuff if needed. I was trying to be conservative with how much patch I was cutting, so I'd start the ball right near the end of the patch. I recovered 3 of my patches, and all of them were pretty asymmetrical. I saw one fly off at about a 30 degree angle to my shot. I'm pretty sure this wasn't helping my accuracy at all. Next time I'll use more material and cut more off of each side. The stuff is pretty darn cheap.

Have some variety. I should have brought Goex along with the Pyrodex, but I wasn't thinking. I was also using CCI #11 caps, which work well in my revolvers, but aren't all that hot. I used to keep some Winchester #11 Magnum caps on hand, but didn't have any. I wish I had, they throw a lot more flame and likely would have helped with the ignition problems. I went out and got some after the range.

Share. A kid and his dad were admiring all the smoke I was making, and came over to talk. I offered to let them shoot my 1858, and the kid's face positively lit up. I loaded up some nice soft loads for him and handed it over. Six shots later he was grinning like a Cheshire cat, and it was pretty cool to see him get so excited.

Black powder is fun. I need to shoot more.

What did you learn today?

What did I learn today? That in spite of the problems, you had more fun than I did. I also learned that in my dotage my back doesn't like chipping 2" worth of ice off the drivewayand shoveling it for a couple hours. I'll be lucky if I can move tomorrow.

Do your research before buying. Saves you from buying junk.

I switched my Howdah to musket caps so I could run it with 777. Runs fine on real BP, no ignition with 777 with any #11 caps of any brand. Luckily I always have some priming flasks with the real deal which bailed me out on my first range trip (just a little down the chute before the 777 made all the difference).

Right down on the end http://www.possibleshop.com/s-s-nipples.html $10 for a pair of them. I already have a ton of musket caps and 777 to use up so for me it was worthwhile. The right solution of course is to use the real deal.

And sharing is definitely the best. I love having some kid next to me when I'm shooting a black powder rifle, and he clearly wants to shoot it, and I just load it up with 30 grains instead of 70 and let him take a shot. HUGE smiles.

I have never had any problem with Pyrodex igniting in my Pedersoli pistols using CCI #11 caps. Maybe the nipple or the passage between the nipple and the chamber is either dirty or restricted. When problems like this arise I have to look towards the hardware before I blame the "software".

I'm not blaming the gun. I knew better than to try to run Pyrodex in this thing, as I'd seen Eljay's post previously. I just wasn't paying attention when I packed my stuff this morning. It should run fine with Goex. It's a funky ignition passage into the barrel, and pyrodex is harder to light.

Packman, what I learned today by reading your post is whenever that youngster sees your revolver in a western television show or a western movie he’s going to remember that experience shooting that Remington and start beaming all over again. I learned also that I think you just made a lifelong convert to the shooting sports.

Good Job!!!! ;)

My last post was directed more at Steel Horse Rider who appeared to have familiarity with Pedersolis (which are generally excellent) but not the Howdah (which is excellent except for ignition with subs). It varies from unit to unit so it was completely worth a try but better to bring the goex now that you know. I think there's something fussy about how the holes are drilled to carry the flame down and if they're not quite right or not quite large enough or something it just won't quite work with the subs. The design just has no room for manufacturing error. Probably possible to fix it but I literally have two thousand musket caps and I just don't shoot muskets that often. Better to let the Howdah have them.

Eljay: You are correct, I have several Pedersoli's but not the Howdah model. After I posted I noticed he lives in Florida so the humidity might impact the ignitability of the Pyrodex. Since I live in a dry climate humidity problems that plague others do not happen. I guess I just grow weary of the Pyrodex bashing. I have no dog in the fight but I have burned through several pounds of Pyrodex in both pistols and rifles without a problem. I also have burned through several pounds of Goex in my Flintlocks without a problem. I have yet to experience the cleaning issues expressed by some with either flavor. Whether a person chooses to use the original or a substitute should not be cause for derision although around here it sometimes causes some challenges.

Hey! We's is guys, if we dun it right the fust time we didnt learn nothin'! Tight ball & patch beats extra powder charge most times. Pyro-crap sucks unless it is new then it only sucks half as much. Howdah accuracy is half way across the Howdah: 5 yards. Anything more than that is wishful thinking.

I confirmed what I already knew, that if you can survive a home construction project with your sanity and marriage intact, you have really accomplished something. That whoever said to take your best estimate and double it knew what the hell they were talking about. That working from home ain't all roses, coffee and pajamas.

That I'd rather have been shooting and fooling with a Howdah. ;)

the only ''good'' thing about Pyrodreck is that it smells like burning plastic when you shoot it, and when mixed with potting soil, makes flowers grow.

I dont mind pyrodex in the colt but it seems harder in the remington.

I didnt like it much when i started but i tried it later and it seems fairly accurate.

I should buy a new bottle, the 3 bottles i have are all old so im sure they have lost a little pop.

Send them to me. I had some 15 years old and did not seem to matter.

I think they only way you would know is to shoot as often as i do or shoot say 3 with old then shoot 3 wiht new.

I even noticed it with some newer T7 that i got.

Phil gave me some 2F T7 over the summer it was about half full and i shot the heck out of that stuff. I liked it so much i went and got another 2F jug and this new jug had shockingly more kick then the last jug. I took a second look at the powder before i reloaded because i thought i had 3F. It even felt quicker.

I put a dessicant pack AND an oxygen absorber in each of my two bottles of Pyrodex.
I figure, it can use all the help it can get.
