The Ocean, Rain, and condensation from freezing here in the Arctic get a guys gun wet more than most. The barrel and chamber recive special attention with clening and a light oiling when not actually being fired.
My .22 and my boys shotguns are coverd with rustolium primer paint, spary it on, and we slather it on thick!!
The boys have Mosins as well, ad they keep 'em spotless and cleanly coverd while hunting in the Icepack or on the Ocean for walrus, Seals and small Whales, and its chaep, weffective and thief proof, but under all those layers is a really sweet gun with all the blue it came with.

+1 on Gun Kote. that stuff is simply AMAZING! short of dragging an AK thru a rock field, or throwing it into a slush box, and letting rocks flow across it for hours, you would be hard pressed to make this stuff come off if properly applied and cured. we have used it for many, many years, dating back to way before Kal Gard was doing guns, and their products were aimed at motorcycles and hi performance engines. (1970's) the one thing that will let it fail, is improper application and or curing. that part is CRITICAL. if you just spray paint it and forget it, it will be no better than a $6.00 can of Krylon enamel paint. but if the gun is cleaned properly prior to application, and the finish is baked on correctly, you could forget about rust from exposure to the elements for years to come, as long as the gun is treated with any kind of care and respect. keep it fairly clean, wipe it down occasionally (a few times a month minimum), keep it from being dragged across gravel, rocks, etc. and it will be good to go for a long, long time.

My stainless mini-14 rusted after a couple nights in a car trunk in Florida, though thankfully the rust was superficial. My parkerized Romanian AK never rusted, in the same climate. Stainless is better than blued, but at least in my limited experience, parkerized may be at least as good as stainless.

GunKote might be the best bet. I think benEzra's experience is valuable too. Get a parkarized one, soak it in oil, and don't sweat it. Make sure it has a chrome bore, though!

You might also consider painting it with something that will form a waterproof layer. I think the Russian Saigas are done up this way over a phosphate finish. While its not tough like anodizing, it does protect the metal underneath.

I'd figure out what they do in Russia to keep them from rusting. Alaska can't be a whole lot different from an AK's typical environment.

Thats a good point Walking Dead. Apparently we can see Russia from our back yard up here :p

Not joshing you, thats something to look into.

The Russian standard AK finish is epoxy paint over parkerizing. And they actually make the troops clean the rifles and oil them.

I have a chrome one from classic arms. It is pretty neat ;)
