In a totally platonic way, you understand.

Just got done watching two episodes of Mail Call, my favorite show, on the History Channel. After giving the viewers an eye-opening guided tour of NORAD, Gunny performed his trademark watermelon-surgery with an M! Garand, followed by an honest-to-god MP44. The firing demonstrations were accompanied by concise but very accurate and infomative histories of both weapons, including several minutes devoted to John Garand.

This is just a great show for military history buffs and gun lovers.

After watching so many episodes of Mail Call, I almost can't watch Full Metal Jacket anymore...have to FF through the part where R. Lee gets wasted....too heartbreaking.

Must be liberal watermelons, green outside but really red on the inside. I do enjoy his show, he is living the dream life though. :)

Just saw the same episode tonight. The biggest thing I noticed though was the lack of hearing protection. I have seen him wear ear plugs before, but not in this one.

Hkmp5sd,

In one sense, even though it would be an older designation, it would be an assault rifle. Or at least a battle rifle. ;)

I mean, what you class an M1 Garand as?

He did an excellent job describing the Stg44 as the 1st "Assault Rifle" and defined that as a select fire weapon firing an intermediate cartridge. A weapon that combined the full auto cabability and minimal recoil of a submachinegun with the range and accuracy of a rifle. He then called the SKS an assault rifle.

The M1 is a semi-automatic rifle. The SKS is a semi-automatic carbine.

artherd asked "I thought the SKS was infact origionally a select-fire rifle in China? Wrong?"

The SKS was the basis for a select fire assault weapon used by the Red Chinese Army. What can I say? The PRC loves to be different, but not too different, than the rest of the world.

Who prefers Russian Quality, to Chinese mass production.

On that last entry with the photo of "Gunny" in the barracks i found that I could hear a second quotation while the first one was just finishing. give it a try. :)

Ermey does have the best job going for sure. Imagine getting to fly in jets, ride in all sorts of vehicles and play with all sorts of toys.

I went to his website, its rather interesting. Has his biography, stuff he's selling, auctions for support of veterans, etc. Didn't know that he got a degree in drama after finishing his tour of duty.

Saw the same episode Saturday night.

That Garand was a beaut! Did you see the nice figuring in the wood and the shine on that stock?

Gunny is the best! Where can I get a job like that?

He won me over when I heard him on the radio (or was it radio coverage of when he was on CNN or Good Morning America or something?)

Anyway, some liberal announcer was asking him about his trip to Iraq or something, on Veteran's Day and when the interview was ending, he asked

"Is today veterans day or Michael Jackson Trial day? Cuz' listening to the news, I can't tell."

Way to make a point, Gunny.

(someone who knows the real facts of the incident please straighten me out. I just remember the vague outline and how impressed I was.)

And I love Mail Call, too! Semper Fi!

Waitone,

Gunny's alive and well (at least the time of this writing). Guys here were referring to the scene in "Full Metal Jacket" where he gets shot.

By the way, anyone recognize the wacked out shooter? Maybe that's why I don't care for him, taking out the gunny like that!

i got a photo with R. Lee Ermey at the SHOT Show, he was the spokesperson for Glock Inc. and was doing a book signing for his "Mail Call" show. got an autographed Full Metal Jacket DVD and book, along with a photo with him. nice guy, he was supposed to only sign autographs until 2:30 pm but i got to the front of the line about an hour later (3:30) and i wasn't even the last guy in line. he said he didn't mind missing his plane flight and would wait until each and every person in line got to meet and talk with him.

he said he has never been on time for a flight anyway after a public appearance and has always caught a later flight because he feels that if people wait to meet him he would be rude to leave without meeting them as well.

he said that once he was at a PX on a Marine Base on a Sunday and they had to close up shop with people still waiting in line. So he went outside to the parking lot and they continued on. that is one classy guy.

Not so. I just went back and looked (TiVo)... He was wearing skin tone ear plugs.
