i dont know what it is, but ever since i got my 642, i've been totally enamored (ive only bought one other auto SINCE my 642... a Para SSP 1911, only because i REALLY wanted at least one 1911).

since then, it's all i've bought.

bought a 625JM off a local, although wasn't particularly fond of it (NICE gun, just not as accurate as i would have liked it to be with the 4" barrel). ended up selling it to fund my new AR for NRA Highpower.

well, i just got it's replacement. an old timer turned in his entire collection to my local gun shop...LOTS of cool toys. unfortunately no winchester/marlin 1894 in .357mag (a toy ive been searching for since last year!)

he did, however, turn in a VERY nice (apparently rarely ever fired) 6" 686-6 powerport!

it DOES have the lock (not a big deal, i plan on grinding the nub off anyways).

but wow, i picked it up, and everything felt natural in my hand. i could get a good SOLID grip (which i had a hard time with on the larger 625 / n-frame). i bartered, and walked away for $159! (i had $200 in store credit/ from a previous return, and a $100 gift certificate).

took it to the range friday night, and oh man, it's more accurate than i am! @ 50ft, i could hold a solid 3-4" group on a B27 target (silhouette).

i'm already looking for parts for it! the trigger, while not gritty at all, is still heavy for my liking, and this is going to be a target / PPC gun for me (i will not be doing the full underlug / bomar sight JUST yet...they're hard enough to find, and i'm working @ holding the 9ring right now....once i get into holding the 10/X rings, i'll think about it).

any suggestions for parts? ive had good luck with Wolfe springs in my 642, but a buddy (S&W wheelgun guru) suggested the Miculek spring kit on Brownell's over the wolfe (he'd heard good things, but no personal experience with it). i'm already 90% sold on an SDM fiber optic front sight (had one on the 625, and was quite fond of it), and undecided on the rear. SDM suggests a Millet .410 w/ their .300height front, but the rear notch on the Millet is still a tad narrow for my liking (i prefer a wide rear notch, or U-notch w/ the F/O front). my buddy will be slicking the action/sear for me (not that i dont trust myself to do it, well, really, i dont, but he has all the tools/knowledge/experience to do it.)

Very very nice, it looks perfect to me as is. It may be a good idea to shoot it 500 + rounds before you start replacing parts and polishing the action, then you will know if the change is truely an inprovement.

The biggest improvement anyone can do on a nice Smith, like yours, is to spent acouple of thosand rounds on the operator. Good luck and good shooting. (Oh yea black sights are generally the perfered color for PPC.)

already got a few hundred through it (i reload .38sp on a large scale, as it's only ~ $40/k for me)...with plans for more. it's not "unfired", and the actions definately had a workout already...the triggers just a bit heavier than i'd prefer.

i know black sights are preferred for PPC...by most people

blacked out F/R sights + black target = tough night at the range. i've had F/O sights on some of my other guns, and it usually tightens my groups up considerably (since i can actually see the front sight clearly!)

i'm looking for input moreso for the spring kit / rear sight. i'll probably be bobbing the hammer on this one (i almost never shoot SA), and want a considerably lighter DA pull. (i use Federal SP primers for my PPC loads, so light strikes is a non-issue)
