In another thread. I bought a savage Stevens 20 gauge single shot. Model is a 9478. The one with a button for the barrel release built into the trigger guard. It's dinged up and has some rust spotting. It set me back $80 and so I'm about to do the unmentionable. I'm going to bubba this bad boy. Bead is getting replaced, barrel is going down to 18.5 stock is getting cut to youth model 13" or so lop. Lastly I'm going to camo it. I'm trying to decide on what pattern. But I'm going to play on some card board first. My wife has a decal machine so we can get it tight doing a paint and peel. Part of my question is should I sand and strip the stock first? I'm going to kroil it and buff all the steal with scotchbright then hit it with brake cleaner to remove the oil before paint. Am I going to far?

It needs cleaning badly so I'm about to tear into it. But this is her in as is shape.

Sounds like an interesting project. Photos are a must when you're done.
I second the motion............. It sure needs some attention but looks as though it would clean up enough for some of that camo spray paint from Wal-Mart that I've seen used on gun barrels and receivers. Not sure about the wood but it doesn't look too bad; maybe a light sanding before painting?

Considering the shotgun is built on a 12 gauge frame, an 18.5" barrel with a simple bead front will likely pattern high, so some method of raising the new bead should be considered.
