I need a good deal on a M&P 15 Sport

I have 1k through mine now (only 5mo old), and it's been flawless as well.

Every review helps. I've seen lots of positive stuff on this rifle especially considering it's price range. I've seen other AR's that didn't live up to the same standards too. Add that together with the fact that it's a company not likely to go away soon and it's the rifle for me unless I see something better quick.

I like the reports so much I've even thought about selling my rock solid SKS to get one. Now it appears I won't have to do that but my kids may have already bought me a present in which case this would all be moot since I was hoping to help them find me something I want. I may get one for myself but that would probably be in the spring when I would get to shoot it more when I first got it. I gave them a list not too long ago before I saw how cheap the M&P was selling. I might well have a spotting scope on Santa's sleigh as we speak. :)

I don't know much about the ar platform other than the calibers you can get them in. I've heard these m &p sports lack a forward assist and dust covers. What's a forward assist and can one be added? Also can dust covers not be added?

Hey just suck it up and go to your local gun shop and order one, by the time you chase all over the country for your "good deal" you could already have maxed the CC buying sale cans of ammo at PSA and have a thousand empty cases to reload ! Ya snooze ya loose !

I wouldn't sell an SKS right now, but I did feel a similar level of enticement when I spoke with a few people and an instructor locally who've seen the Sport go through training classes without issues, and wholeheartedly recommended it as "the" entry-leve rifle at the time. And it's been exactly that.

The forward assist is what's on the right side, behind the shell deflector... It's got the big button on it. It will help the bolt go into battery. If the rifle doesn't have one, you have to change the upper receiver to one equipped for it. Same for the dust cover.

I don't particularly care one way or the other if an upper has the FA/DC. The scallop on the BCG works fine for helping the bolt go into battery, and I've not had problems with laying the Sport down in the dirt or grass, and I know more people that never close their dust cover than people that do.

The first thing you need to know about AR's is that just about any part can be changed out with a part from any other brand. As long as they use Mil-spec dimensions, that is.

So, if you get the M&P and find out you wand a FA and dust cover, you can just buy a stripped upper, upper parts kit, and the necessary tools and swap out your bargain-basement upper with PSA/Spikes/whatever. The parts can be had for <$75. Vise Block, armorer's wrench and punches for <$100.

With those tools you can swap out just about anything on the rifle, or build another AR for that matter.

Midwest wholesales to other dealers. If they did internet sales and transfers, they'd be undercutting their own dealers

If you happen to be in the South Bend area, Midwest is a good place to visit. The have a LOT of stuff on display. My friend lives 1 1/2 hours away. He came up to buy a factory refurbished Sig pistol because they were very hard to find at that time and price was worth it

I wouldn't sell an SKS right now

It's not likely I will be doing that but can I ask why you say this? As for M&P being entry level all I care about is that it goes bang when you pull the trigger. I've seen plenty of AR's that didn't but I can't find many bad reviews of the M&P. Combine that with the price the company and it's enough to make me want to jump in and get one. The only reason I was so concerned about getting the best price was because it would be my Christmas present so I would want to keep the price down so my kids don't spend too much. If I was buying an AR on my own I would still probably get that rifle because it appears to be the best bang for the buck and I don't need a whole bunch of extra gizmos. I will probably pick up a good sight at some point but for now I'd just go with the iron sights. I'd be using it for CQ anyway so iron sights should be fine. A good red dot sight would likely be in the picture before too long. I'm just looking for the basics and the M&P seems to be ready to cover them as cheaply as possible while still being good quality.

Only because a good SKS is getting harder to find if you ever wanted to replace it. Didn't mean it as SKS > Sport or anything like that.

That is true. I just traded one off that was dang near pristine too. I bought a Yugo that was part of a batch that were rejected for one reason or another. Mine had a hairline crack in the stock about 3/8th of an inch long in a place it would never matter but it was enough to get it put into the rejected bin. I got a great deal on it and had that crack sealed the first day where no one would have ever found it if they didn't know to look. That rifle had been packed in cosomoline since the 60's and hadn't been fired more than a couple of test rounds at most. I only fired it about 50 rounds or so because I had the Norinco and I never could warm up to that whole grenade launcher deal. I traded it for a graduation present for my daughter. It was as nice as they come though. But so was the silver and turquoise bracelet I got for it. It was made by native Americans too so my daughter loved it. I guess I could have bought the bracelet straight out but like I said I never cared a lot of the Yugo with all the front end weight. I thought about modifying it to get rid of the grenade launcher but it was too pristine to muck it up. Still I sorta wish I had kept it just because it was in such good shape. There won't be any more of them like that most likely.

I suppose I would be nuts to get rid of a Norinco that has been as reliable as mine has been too. I've shot so many rounds through that rifle I couldn't begin to guess what the round count is. It's many thousands. It works perfect with detachable mags too which is something that is hard to come by. And I've done the upgrades they should all have. Yeah I would be stupid to get rid of it. I'll never shoot the ammo I have for it either. It is tempting to move to a more modern platform but it will still get the job done IMO. I can manage to get an AR without selling it I'm sure.

I overheard an Academy Sports sales rep tell a customer they would be on sale for $449.00 but I did not hear exactly when the sale would start. I would keep an eye on their web site to see if anything shows up.

Keep an eye out on PSA, or sign up for their email alerts. They have the xmass ar15 deals going right now. They change every day.

I just picked one of these up for $399. http://palmettostatearmory.com/inde...ainless-mid-length-1-7-freedom-rifle-kit.html
Add in a $49 blem lower, a little shipping and ffl fee, and you have a nice ar with fa and dust cover for under $500. Add a $50 carry handle or the optic of your choice.

I have both a psa premium and s&w mp15t, and they both group pretty much the same.

I've heard good things about the new psa freedom line over at ar15.com,
