I need advice on which rifle to buy

Another vote here for the 243. About 1/2 the recoil of a 270 Win. but very effective on deer size animals.

This years rifle purchase will be a Remington 798 sps. It is really a slavic built mauser. They are going for around 450 and are chambered for .243 Winchester that would be good for deer and moderate recoil.

.

I'll echo the suggestion of a .44 magnum lever action. Pistol round lever guns
are *so very much fun* and the recoil is nearly non-existant. If I were in your
situation, though, I would go for a traditional .243 rifle with a wood stock and
heavy barrel. You can reach out further and a nice hefty rifle will absorb
most of the recoil. Plenty for deer.

Another idea is Rugers M77MkIIVT, which has a target-weight 26" barrel in .243 Win.

It also has a 2 lb target trigger, unlike the triggers they put on any other rifle.

Of course, it's going to weigh 11 lbs by the time you have a scope on it, but you won't even feel the recoil. Especially if you put a Limbsaver recoil pad on it.

(My wife thinks of hers as her "poor man's beanfield rifle"... :) )

my fiancee shoots 22-250 and loves the fact that it will hit where she is aiming and kicks less than a 243. It is plenty suitable for deer I personally have seen plenty of deer not take a step after being shot with it. Actually I have seen more deer run from a 243 that 22-250 and not because of shot placement. A 22-250 operates on a completely different plane. The small bullet with devastating energy causes a massive wound cavity and produces heart stopping shock. However this round still penetrates deep enough to shoot a deer at any angle other than facing directly away from you. In my neck of the woods a 22-250 is the most sought after caliber on the market and that is due to its light-kicking versatility.

Remington or winchester 55 grain soft points always do the trick and your kids will love the round.

I settled on a 308

I went looking for a 243 or a 308. They seemed to be the calibers most recommended. I found a 308 that I like and purchased it.

Thanks to all of you for your help

My 9 year old nephew shoots a 7mm-08 encore and doesn't have any issues. That is the way I will probably go in a few years for my son.

My 7400 in .270 recoils less than my 94 in .30-30

On a side note...

Work up your front and side abdominal muscles a bit. They are what's holding you against the recoil when you fire. That may help with any selection.

+1 on the .257

I have no experience with one of these, but would anyone recommend him looking at a TC contender style pistol? I know we are in the rifle forum, but where I live hunters who use handguns have a lot more area open to hunting than hunters using rifles. It would seem like less to carry around, might be something to look at. Maybe someone here who has used one some could tell you about it... I was just throwing that out there.

Do you reload? If not and you can afford to buy the equipment I would recomend doing so and reloading for your 308. That way you can follow the advice of above and load some rounds listed in the manuels that are minimum loads. This will reduce the recoil quite a bit.

Good Luck

I would suggest a .243. That is about the minimum bullet diameter I would go for deer. I recommend bolt actions, but a semi-auto will have less recoil. Also, if you keep shots to 100 yards or less an SKS with soft point ammo will kill any deer on the planet. The felt recoil is almost nothing.
