Having looked at both the eotech and the aimpoint, I have decided on the Aimpoint. I just need a little help choosing which model, magnification, and mounting method. It's going on a A3 CAR-15. Distance will be form a couple of yards (HD and competion) to maybe 200 yards, most being 25-100. I'm afraid that if I get the 1X it wont be enough at 200, but that 2x might be too much up close. What do you guys think?
My second question is should I mount it on the carry handle or should I remove the handle, and mount it on the rail. I have a standard front sight, and I'm afraid that the sight will interfear with the sight picture. I have read that because the front sight is so close that it won't obscure the sight picture. Anyone have any experience, thought, suggestions, wise remarks?

Any help would be great.
Thanks
Fred

Ampoint M3 on rail they also sell a 3X magnifier that you can mount behind it for longer shots, has twist off or flip over mount so switching from magnifier to non is quick Heres mine on my M1A.

Can't comment on the 1x vs. 2X, as I have never used anything but a 1x. I would definitely mount it on the rail, as the carry handle mount is really high. The bore axis offset becomes problematic at close distances. Regarding the front sight interfering with the sight picture, don't worry about it. With both eyes open and focused on the target, you will never notice the front sight tower.

My two cents.

The front sight is of course visible through your reflex, but since you're shooting with both eyes open, it wont obscure anything. You learn quickly to ignore it. Mount to the rail using the ARMS #22 and the full spacer (use Loktite on the #22's base screws) or use the Aimpoint QRP and the spacer. A nice flip-up rear sight makes a spiffy addition. ARMS, and GG&G out of Tucson, both make excellent ones.

At 200 to 400 yards a 1x reflex sight is just fine and dandy unless you're trying to print sub MOA groups. I really have no idea where the notion came from that says you can't use reflex sights at those distances-- I guess most people don't get the opportunity to actually try it (I do) but consider the fact that your front iron sight post is something like three times the apparent width of the 4 MOA red dot, and people use irons out to 1,000 yards in Highpower and to hit targets of a much smaller apparent size than the sight post's width (I believe yours are calibrated to 600 or 800 meters, my A2 rear sight is calibrated to 800, when starting with a combat zero of 300 meters). Please see my extensive article on your very subject;

(Disclosure; I'm in the business of selling this stuff and I use it myself)
