Aimpoint Comp ML2 vs. Eotech 552 Holosight

Good discussion here, as always.

I own a first-generation Bushnell HOLOsight and an Aimpoint Comp M-XD. While neither of these are the current generation, I find that I prefer the HOLOsight system and will be buying an EOTech 552 or 512 in the near future.

1. I am using the Aimpoint Rail Grabber mount. The mount permits the scope to rotate in the mount! This means I gradually lose my zero as I fire rounds ... this is very frustrating. If I was using an aftermarket mount I might understand, but this is Aimpoint's mount (which was an extra $75!).

:cuss:

2. I prefer the HOLOsight reticle. Again, this is personal preference.

3. I like the EOTech 552's ability to use AA batteries. Much easier to obtain than the Aimpoint's batteries.

Despite the above, I will keep my Aimpoint after I get the EOTech. I have five semi-auto AR/Mini/AK style rifles and they could all use some sort of combat optic. Current plan is to put the Aimpoint on my Egyptian MAADI (after purchasing the UltiMAK Scout-type mounting system) and the HOLOsight on my pre-ban Mini-14.

Only thing wrong with the aimpoint is that the lens covers seemed to almost jump off of the sights as soon as a soldier gets to the field. After a few field uses more had lens covers missing than not. This was '00-'02 before I got out, maybe this has been fixed?

I have had all the optics I sell get returned for some reason or another. I like EOTech the best because their in the U.S. and fixes don't take as long as Aimpoint's (Sweden).

Batteries really are not an issue for me....the Aimpoints last forever now...and a quick trip to Radio Shack will get all you need.

I like the Ghost Ring aspect of the Aimpoint when practicing for the unlikely event that it goes Tango Uniform

I've had both. I still have the Aimpoints (ML2's)

I actually prefer the Eotech's heads-up, non-tube-like display. At close range the 65MOA circle is way fast. The 1MOA dot is a little small for my tastes, unless the brightness is turned up all the way.

Don't expect to get the 500 hours out of the AA Eotech if you plan to use it outside during the day. The default brightness setting (which is how they get the 500 hour number) doesn't make the reticle stand out enough. At 3gun matches I have frequently seen users waiting to turn on their sights until the buzzer sounds, then finding they have to pushpushpushpushpushpushpush the button up from the default level just to get it bright enough to shoot with.

You would think they'd just leave the sight on and turned all the way up for the whole match, but maybe due to the short battery life and/or the cost of the Lithium AA batteries most users seem to have a subconsious need to turn them off as soon as they finish shooting. The Aimpoint's tube design doesn't seem to need the brightness turned up as much to be useful, so I would expect to get around 2,000 hours of use (rated at 1,000 hours on the brightest setting).

The new EOTech Rev F 512/552 have a run time of 900 hours + using Lithium batteries at a setting that would be useable in bright sun light..

:banghead:

Dang it! Now I have no excuses! Are these available now, or are people still selling Rev E?

eotech mounting

I just got one today. Is it supposed to be slightly crooked to the right when mounted? I kept playing with it but it seems like thats the way its supposed to be.Can someone feed me some info.

Welcome aboard.

Could you please post a photo of your problem? I cannot seem to visualize it as the bottom of the EOTech is pretty flat made specifically for the 1913 rail but should fit the Weaver. What base are you using?

Most manufacturers use the method of pulling the rail grabber down against the top flat of the rail. The bottom 45 and the top flat are the contact surfaces, so that the grabber goes on at a consistent angle regardless of minor variations in rail width. EOTech doesn't do it quite that way.

Most EOTech sights will sit at a slight cant. It has to do with the technique they use to grab the rail. Slight variations in the rail width will vary the cant. It is to be considered normal and nothing to worry about unless it is extreme. It certainly hasn't deterred the U.S. military from ordering them by the thousands. We sell quite of few of them here at UltiMAK, and we use them on some of our own firearms.

By the way-- if you plan to keep the same zero on your EOTech as 99.99% of users will, rather than treating it like a target scope wherein you would be contstantly adjusting it for zero, there is no amount of cant that can make the slighest difference in performance.
